Students studying in the Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) had the opportunity to engage in discussion with Spanish political scientist and former Vice President Pablo Iglesias Turrión in November.

Of all the Hamilton programs interrupted by the pandemic, off-campus study was perhaps the most severely affected. However, this semester, students are once again pursuing academic interests far away from the Hill. To understand how Hamilton’s programs are readjusting, we asked Assistant Dean of Off-Campus Study Carolyn North and several students located around the world. Below are some of their thoughts.

Audrey Nadler ’18 is eager to return to Spain after graduation as the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA). She spent her junior year abroad in Madrid with Hamilton's Academic Year in Spain program. She is a world politics and Hispanic studies major.

Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) students recently visited the autonomous community of the Basque Country, known as Euskadi in Basque, and situated in the northeastern part of Spain. Twenty-seven percent of the population speak Basque- an ancestral language isolate to its people that is believed to be one of the few surviving pre-Indo-European languages in Europe. Its origin is not known.

Twenty-six students from Hamilton, Grinnell, Scripps, Williams, Bryn Mawr, Reed and Amherst College recently visited the Spanish Region of Andalusia as part of the HCAYS orientation trip to start the semester.

Five Hamilton juniors have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships for study abroad in the spring 2017 semester. Recipients are Natasha Espinosa, Daiyan Hossain, Kalvin Nash, Kureem Nugent and Chidera Onyeoziri.

Students in Hamilton’s Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) program visited Barcelona Nov. 4-6. The students explored the city and experienced firsthand its strong sense of identity and uniqueness.
