Alex Medina ’22, a creative writing and Hispanic studies major, shares his story of combining full-time remote studies with work at a bilingual newspaper in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Boyle Heights is a vibrant, tight-knit neighborhood with a long history of activism on the East Side of Los Angeles. Over the years, a wide-range of nonprofit organizations have risen to uplift the community in a multitude of ways while addressing important issues impacting the area.

Kathleen "Kat" McGrory '05, former editor of The Spectator and currently deputy investigations editor at the Tampa Bay Times, was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist for "impactful reporting, based on sophisticated data analysis, that revealed an alarming rate of patient fatalities following Johns Hopkins’ takeover of a pediatric heart treatment facility."

Alumni have two fellow alumni to cheer for as they watch this year’s Academy Awards presentation on Sunday, March 4.

Andrew Metz ’91 is the managing editor for Oscar-nominated film Abacus: Small Enough to Jail. A documentary directed by Steve James and produced by FRONTLINE, Abacus is nominated in the Academy Awards’ best documentary category.

ESPN Deputy Content Editor Lauren Reynolds ’02 and Emmy Award-winning ESPN producer Bryan Jaroch’97 returned to the Hill on Nov. 9 to speak about their experiences as sports journalists.

In a thoroughly engaging, thought-provoking and enlightening presentation, New York Times media editor and Hamilton alumnus Jim Windolf ’86 spoke to an audience of Hamilton students and community members on Thursday, Oct. 26.

After working as a correspondent for the White House, Time magazine, and writing two books, Hamilton College Trustee Barrett Seaman ‘67 returned to the Hill to share his perspective on the controversy of journalism. He presented a lecture and facilitated a discussion on Oct. 19.

“I’ve always been interested in journalism, and thought that working at a magazine would be a great place to get started,” Maura Colley ’19 said. Eventually, her choice came down to how well-organized and polished the publication was, both in print and online, leading Colley to Worth Magazine, where she works as an intern of the editorial team.
