  • Part of an interview with Visiting Assistant Professor of Italian appeared in the March 23 edition of La Repubblica.it, the online version of the well-known Italian newspaper. The interview focused on the likelihood that the famous Bronte sisters owe their last name to a small Sicilian town located at the foothills of Mt. Etna.

  • Matthew Palmer’16  and Evelyn Torsher ’17 have been awarded the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). Palmer will study Chinese in China and Torsher will study Arabic in Jordan, Oman or Morocco.

  • Mary Beth Barth, director of the Critical Languages Program and Language Center, presented Teaching the LCTLs (Less Commonly Taught Languages) at the Northeast Association of Language Learning and Technology (NEALLT) Conference in March at Carnegie Mellon University. She has served as president of NEALLT and conference host.

  • The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has invited Visiting Assistant Professor of Critical Languages Mary Sisler to participate in a three-week summer institute titled  “Leonardo da Vinci: Between Art and Science.”

They were accompanied by Mireille Koukjian, instructor of Arabic; Ahmad Alshorman, Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant; Mary Beth Barth, director of the CLP; and Aaron Spevack, visiting professor of religious studies.
