The Political Economy of Global Responses to COVID-19, co-edited by Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Relations Alan Cafruny, was recently published by Palgrave MacMillan.

The Right Honourable David Cameron, former Prime Minster of the United Kingdom (2010-2016), participated in a question-and-answer session with Hamilton College President David Wippman on Oct. 15 for the 2018 Sacerdote Great Names series.

Charlotte Carstens ’16 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Germany. Carstens, a German studies and world politics major, studied in Tübingen, Germany, during her junior year.

Margaret “Meg” Alexander ’15 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Malaysia. A world politics and Hispanic studies major, she studied in Madrid through Hamilton’s Program in Spain in spring 2014.

Gretha Suarez ’15 has been awarded a Fulbright Research Grant to India. Through her project, Gender and Public Space: Politics of Women’s Safety in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, she will spend the 2015-16 academic year studying how urban infrastructure regulates women’s presence in Mumbai and Ahmedabad’s public spaces.  These cities provide a platform to examine the conditions of women’s safety and rights to public space by comparing infrastructure that facilitates access.

Matthew Palmer’16  and Evelyn Torsher ’17 have been awarded the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). Palmer will study Chinese in China and Torsher will study Arabic in Jordan, Oman or Morocco.

With extensive media coverage of gruesome acts committed by ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Jihadists, the Taliban and the Boko Haram, to name a few, many Americans wonder why Islam lends itself so readily to violent extremism. The same question has been recently raised on-campus by the Enquiry, a weekly opinion editorial sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Institute, prompting the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the Arabic and Middle East Club (AMEC) to invite a panel of experts to campus in an effort to deepen the community’s understanding of the connection, or lack thereof, between Islam and extremism.

Hamilton College will host a panel titled “Islam: A Religion of Extremism?” with a panel of experts, including former U.S. ambassadors and faculty with expertise in the Middle East, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 4:15 p.m., in the Chapel. The discussion is free and open to the public.

After spending the day on campus visiting classes and talking with Hamilton students, this year’s Sacerdote Great Names Series speakers, Nobel Peace Prize laureates Dr. Bernard Kouchner and Shirin Ebadi, took to a stage in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on April 24 to address a gathering of the Hamilton community and guests.

Ambassador Edward S. Walker Jr. ’62, the Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Global Political Theory, has returned to the Hill this semester to teach a course on Cultural Diplomacy: Tool of Diplomacy or Imperialism (Government 341.)
