Delegates of Hamilton College’s Student Assembly attended the bi-annual New York Six Student Government Conference held at Union College  on Nov. 6. St. Lawrence University student government representatives also attended. Hamilton was represented by José Olivares ’16, Lillie Piper ’18 and Annalie Garcia ’19.

Assistant Professor of Biology Cynthia Downs presented an invited talk earlier this month at the annual meeting of the Raptor Research Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. The international conference was hosted by the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory.

“Negras, Mulatas y Morenas en La Española del Siglo XVI (1502-1606),” a chapter by Scholar-in-Residence Lissette Acosta Corniel, was recently published in the edited volume Esclavitud, mestizaje y abolicionismo en los mundos hispánicos.

The Hamilton College and Community Masterworks Chorale with members of Symphoria will perform Handel’s Messiah on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts on the campus of Hamilton College.

Hunger is a problem in many areas of the country including in the Mohawk Valley. Assisting in addressing this community challenge are two Hamilton student organizations, The Harvest and Hamilton vs Hunger.

Professor of Africana Studies Heather Merrill is co-editor of Spaces of Danger: Culture and Power in the Everyday with Lisa M. Hoffman (University of Washington-Tacoma). The book, a collection of essays published by University of Georgia Press, is part of its Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation series.

Dozens of Psi Upsilon alumni returned to campus on Friday, Nov. 13, to spend that night and all day Saturday working with 30-40 current Hamilton undergraduate members to help prepare them in their pursuit of internships and full time jobs. Indicative of the five-year-old program’s success, 40 out of 44 undergraduate members had jobs or internships before commencement last year. Eight of this year's 11 seniors have already secured jobs after graduation.

Phyllis Breland ’80, director of Opportunity Programs and interim director of Diversity and Inclusion at Hamilton College, was featured in “Avoiding Burnout: How 10 CDOs Balance Work with Life” in Insight Into Diversity magazine. Breland is an Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity (HEOP) graduate of Hamilton.

Seven students from Hamilton’s Microfinance organization attended Lend for America’s 7th Annual Summit at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, on Nov. 7 and 8. Hamilton attendees were Arthur Williams ’16, Enjay Ofoleta ’16, Flavia Oliveira’16, Sarah Magee’18, Elizabeth Tran’18, Joey Rokous’18 and Ifeoluwa Aiyelabowo ’19.

Hamilton’s Curling Club is back in action with two tournaments under their belts and a number of promising underclassmen on the roster. The team has already participated in tournaments hosted by Boston University at Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass. (Nov. 7-8), and by the Rochester Institute of Technology (Nov. 13-15).
