Four members of the Hamilton faculty were recognized for their research and creative successes through the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards at Class & Charter Day on Friday, May 8. The Awards were instituted in three categories by Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo in 2008.

Hamilton College Trustee Thomas J. Tull '92 will address the Hamilton College Wall Street Association on Wednesday, May 27 at the New York Athletic Club.  Tull is the founder, chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures, which has co-produced recent blockbusters such as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, 300 and Watchmen. In addition to sharing his experiences in the cinematic business, Tull will discuss the role of private equity and hedge fund investors in the film business.

Hamilton College's highest awards for teaching were presented on May 8 to four faculty members. Professor of Economics Erol Balkan, Katherine Kuharic, the Kevin W. Kennedy Associate Professor of Art, Assistant Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh and Dave Thompson, director of the Fitness and Dance Center and Wellness Programs and professor of physical education, were honored with teaching awards. In addition, Professor of Anthropology Bonnie Urciuoli received the Sidney Wertimer Award from Hamilton's Student Assembly.

Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships and other recognition of student accomplishments were awarded at Hamilton's 59th annual Class & Charter Day convocation on Friday, May 8, in the Chapel. Among the top prizes, Corinne Bancroft '10 won the Milton F. Fillius Jr./Joseph Drown Prize Scholarship, and Ashley Stagner '09 was awarded the James Soper Merrill Prize.

Bob Hansmann '72 hosted Hamilton's Program in New York City students for dinner this week, as they completed their semester in New York. Following is his reflection on the evening.

Moustafa Bayoumi, author of How Does It Feel to be a Problem: Being Young and Arab in America, spoke about the subject at the Science Center's Kennedy Auditorium on May 7. The Brooklyn College professor spent more than an hour lecturing and answering questions about what he learned interviewing Brooklyn youth and their families about growing up Arab and Muslim American in a post-9/11 world.

Eric Kuhn '09 has been named to the UWIRE 100 list, a select group of undergraduate and graduate students judged the top collegiate journalists in the country. This is the second year that Kuhn has been selected by UWIRE. Only seven other student journalists were chosen in both 2008 and 2009.

Students from Lydia Hamessley's Music 154, Music of the World's Peoples, demonstrated Ewe drumming outside Commons on May 6. The students worked on the technique as a class project this semester. Ewe drumming refers to the drumming ensembles of the Ewe people of Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

Moustafa Bayoumi, a professor at Brooklyn College and author of How Does It Feel to Be A Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America, will give a lecture on that topic at Hamilton on Thursday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium (G027) of the Science Center. This event is sponsored by the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center, the History Department and the Dean of Faculty Office, and is free and open to the public.

Hamilton College was shut out for the first time all season in a 7-0 non-conference loss against nationally ranked No. 9 SUNY Cortland at DeLutis Field in Rome, N.Y., on May 5.
