The Hamilton College Performing Arts Series opens the spring semester with a performance of Macbeth presented by the Aquila Theatre Company on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m.  in Wellin Hall. There will be a pre-concert discussion lead by Aquila’s artistic director Peter Meineck at 7 p.m. in Café Opus.  

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi attended the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in Chicago, Jan. 5-9.  She completed her term as president of the Society for Advancing the History of South Asia (SAHSA) by organizing three panels for the conference and convening a business meeting of the organization she led.

A chapter co-authored by Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics Derek Jones was published in volume 12 of the series Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory and Labor-Managed Firms. “Majority Ownership and Chief Executive Compensation,” written with Niels Mygind of Copenhagen Business School, focuses on a study of the effects of differing types of majority ownership, including employee ownership, on executive compensation.

Hamilton will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with several campus and community events in January.

Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Anjela Cannarelli Peck attended the Middle Eastern Studies Association's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., from Dec. 1-4, where she participated in the panel "Sufism and the Occult Sciences." Her paper was titled “Morisco Mysticism and Magic: The 16th Century Leaden Texts of Granada, Spain.”

The homepage of New Deal 2.0, a project of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, featured “FDR Wants You to Combat Misinformation About Progressive Policies,” a blog post by James S. Sherman Professor of Government Philip Klinkner, on Jan. 12. In his essay, Klinkner recounted FDR’s efforts to inform and engage the public to fight back against anti-New Deal attacks and compared these efforts to the strategies that will be essential to President Obama’s reelection campaign.

Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin and Associate Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn recently published their joint work "Geometric Graph Homomorphisms" in the Journal of Graph Theory.

Barbara Gold, the  Edward North Professor of Classics, attended the annual meeting of the American Philological Association in Philadelphia on Jan. 5-8, where she delivered a paper titled “Juvenal: The Idea of the Book,” at a session on “Roman Satire.”

Members of the women's basketball team took a break from games and practices to volunteer at United Cerebral Palsy on Jan. 9. The students helped out in the Pre-K rooms. One teacher commented “the girls were wonderful, and would they please come back?!”

The national news media focused its attention on Hamilton on many occasions in 2011, perhaps most intensely upon the release of a senior thesis written by five graduates. “Are Talking Heads Blowing Hot Air? An Analysis of the Accuracy of Forecasts in the Political Media” was presented on May 2. The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Nation, The Financial Times and dozens of other national and international outlets reported the results almost immediately. Reference to the study continues in various publications.
