Twelve photographs comprising the collection titled “Return,” by Sylvia de Swaan, a lecturer in art at Hamilton College, are featured in an exhibit at Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Commercial Drive in New Hartford through July 30 in conjunction with a feature article on de Swaan and her work in the July/August issue of Black & White Magazine.

Following is the most recent e-mail received from Meghan Moulton '07, one of eight Hamilton students who travelled to Jinja, Uganda, for a month to volunteer with the non-profit group Soft Power Education. The group worked at Lukolo Primary School, and although the others returned to the U.S. on June 22, Moulton decided to stay for another month to lead other groups of volunteers.

Robert Paquette, the Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History, published a book review in Journal of Social History (July, 2005). Paquette reviewed The Rebellious Slave: Nat Turner in American Memory by Scot French (Houghton Mifflin).

Greg Hartt ’08 (Troy, N.Y.) has always been interested in scientific research. “The idea that you could be discovering something new was always appealing to me,” Hartt says. He hopes to find out a few new things about sulfur species in the atmosphere as a student researcher at Hamilton this summer.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, led a debate titled “Are Europe and the U.S. Drifting Apart” at the Summer Institute at Chautauqua June 27-July 1, joined by Professor Neill Nugent of Manchester Metropolitan University, U.K.

The Hamilton College Summer Hockey camp began its 21st year on June 26, with 108 boys from across the nation meeting at Sage Rink, eager to spend two weeks of their summer on the ice.

Although only a rising sophomore, Daniel Tomb ’08 (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) is no stranger to summer research at Hamilton. He worked for Winslow Professor of Chemistry George Shields and Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Karl Kirschner prior to his freshman year as part of Hamilton’s research program for incoming students. “During my freshman year, I had the opportunity to do more research. This summer, I am continuing my research from last summer and from during the school year,” Tomb explains.

Austin Briggs, the Tompkins Professor of English, Emeritus, in June attended the North American James Joyce Conference held at Cornell University, where he delivered a paper, "Mrs. Sinico's Pupils," on the panel "The Vision Thing," which he organized and chaired. In addition, at the invitation of the conference organizers, he co-chaired the three Ulysses reading sessions on the program. Briggs' "Evangelical Joyce" appeared in the fall 2004 issue of the James Joyce Literary Supplement.

Peter Mucha ’06 (Queensbury, N.Y.) is a secret agent man this summer. As a Levitt Fellow, he is devoting 10 weeks of research to cracking the case of Russia’s KGB and current President Vladimir Putin’s affiliation with this organization, in a study titled “Putin’s Past and Russia’s Future: Putin’s Career in the KGB and Russian Politics.”

Alumni Association President Melissa Joyce-Rosen recently announced that members of the association will be receiving ballots for the annual election of Alumni Trustees. The ballot mailing will include information about the seven candidates who are vying for three open positions on the Board.
