Assistant Professor of English Steven Yao delivered a lecture at Yale University titled, “The ‘Chinese Mode’ in Modern American Poetry: A History,” on Feb. 21. The talk discussed the interests and engagement of Hamilton alumnus Ezra Pound with Chinese poetry and philosophy, and how his efforts established a precedent for later poets who have taken Chinese poetry as a subject and inspiration for their own works, including writers such as Gary Snyder, John Yau and Charles Wright.

Author Elizabeth Castelli will present the Department of Classics Winslow Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 4:10 in the Red Pit. Her talk, "Martyrdom and meaning-making in ancient and contemporary Christian Contexts," is free and open to the public.

Professor of Classics Barbara Gold will give a lecture, "How Women (re-)Act in Roman Love Poetry: The Case of Inhuman She-Wolves and Unhelpful Mothers in Propertius," at Colgate University on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 4:10 p.m. The lecture, which is part of Colgate's Humanities Colloquium, will take place in the Ho Lecture Room, 105 Lawrence Hall.

Thirteen Hamilton College seniors were elected this month to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honor society.

An expert on the political economy of the European Union, Leila Talani, will present "The Dollar, the Euro, and the Future of European Integration" on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. in Fillius Events Barn at Hamilton College. Alan Cafruny, Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs and Didar Erdinc, visiting associate professor of economics, will serve as commentators at the lecture. This event is free and open to the public.

Video Artist Kathleen Sweeney presents "Maiden USA" on Monday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 pm in KJ Auditorium. Maiden USA, a multi-media event exploring images of, by and about American teenage girls, is free and open to the public.

Seniors Zachary Hesse and David Gordon will present the results of their summer research project, "A Life Cycle Assessment Comparison of Biodiesel versus Diesel use at Hamilton College," on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 4:30 in the Red Pit. Hesse and Gordon worked with Associate Professor of Biology Michael McCormick. Their research was made possible by an Emerson Summer Collaboration Award.

Hamilton College's annual chili cook-off took place in The Little Pub on February 19 from 1-4 p.m. As one of the numerous events for FebFest, the chili cook-off brought students, professors and staff together to compete, eat and share the result of their cooking abilities with one another.
