Hamilton geology students participated in the Geological Society of America's Northeast and Southeast Sectional Meeting on March 25 - 27 in Washington, D.C. Topics include geoscience education, marine geology and palentology.

Associate Professor of Music Rob Hopkins' barbershop quartet, "Harmonix," won its regional competition held in Canandaigua, N.Y., on April 3-4 and thereby earned the right to compete in the Barbershop Harmony Society international contest to be held in Louisville, June 30 to July 3. In addition, the Hamilton collegiate quartet, "Intermission," won their competition and earned the right to compete in the MBNA Collegiate Barber Shop Quartet Competitition in Louisville on July 2. The members of the quartet are Mike O'Leary (bass), Dan Walker (baritone), David Kolb '02 (lead) and Ellim Song (tenor).

Faculty from four different disciplines came together on April 2 to talk about the causes, evidence and impacts of climate change in a forum co-sponsored by the Levitt Center's 2003-2004 series, "The environment: public policy and social responsibility" and the Environmental Studies Program. Professors Ian Rosenstein of chemistry, Eugene Domack of geology, Bill Pfitsch of biology, and Peter Cannavo of government gave presentations on climate change from the perspectives of their disciplines.

During March and April, works from Music Professor Sam Pellman's recent CD, Selected Planets (innova 597) aired on Syracuse classic radio station and NPR-affiliate WCNY on the program "Fresh Ink." Works presented on this program in March were "Vaporis Congeries Magnae Uranus)," "Neptune Flyby" and "Dancing in the Dark (Pluto)" and "Perelandra (Venus)." On April 2, Pellman's "Perijove (Jupiter)" aired as well.

The Governor of Iowa and Hamilton alumnus Thomas J. Vilsack ’72 was the focus of an article in The Star-Ledger. The article discussed his potential as Kerry's running mate, claiming Vilsack is an attractive running mate because he’s an emotional speaker who appeals to Midwestern values.

A study by Philip Klinkner and Richard Skinner '92, both government professors, was featured in an Associated Press article. Their study, "Black, White, Brown and Cajun: The Racial Dynamics of the 2003 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election," was published by the Berkeley Electronic Press. Analysis by Klinkner and Skinner suggested bias, unexpected support from the so-called "David Duke vote" was decisive in Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco's victory.

Hamilton staff, administrators and M&O employees packed the Events Barn on March 9 to hear President Joan Stewart report on the state of the college. Stewart began by quoting a letter from an alumnus who offered a humorous commentary from former Haverford College president Felix Morley about the struggle college presidents face in trying to please everyone.
