  • Matthew Backes, a 1993 graduate of Hamilton College, has been awarded a 2002 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The awards support original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.

The cave is famous for being the site from which a "Desert Culture" model of human habitation was compiled. The model is now the blueprint for much of Southwest archaeology.
