President George W. Bush has nominated James Howard Yellin '60 to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Burundi.

Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Archaeology Tom Jones was quoted in The Salt Lake Tribune in an article about the reopening and excavation of Danger Cave in western Utah.

Allison Kerbel, a rising sophomore from North Kingstown, R.I., recently had a short story published in Cicada. Kerbel's story, titled "Identity: Self and Sloth," describes a 7th grade gym class run. Cicada is a bimonthly magazine for teenagers and young adults ages 14 and up.

Kevin Kennedy '70, the outgoing chair of Hamilton's Board of Trustees, was honored during Reunion Weekend festivities. Kennedy was presented with a plaque during the Alumni Association's annual meeting on June 8. The text follows:

Matthew Backes, a 1993 graduate of Hamilton College, has been awarded a 2002 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The awards support original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.

Hamilton Professor of Anthropology Tom Jones was quoted in a Salt Lake Tribune story exploring the newest archaeological work in Utah's Danger Cave. The cave is famous for being the site from which a "Desert Culture" model of human habitation was compiled. The model is now the blueprint for much of Southwest archaeology.

John J. Donohue III '74 was named the William H. Neukom Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. The professorship is a gift of William H. Neukom, Microsoft executive vice president for law and corporate affairs.

The war on terrorism, U.S. dependence on Saudi Arabian oil, and the stalemate in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process were among topics discussed at an Alumni College event titled "The Modern Middle East," held during Reunion Weekend.
