Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, presented a lecture on Feb. 11 at Lafayette College. He discussed How College Works, a book he co-authored with his former student Christopher Takacs ’05.

Lauren Magaziner ’12 returned to the Hill on Nov. 7 to give an informal talk about her newly published children’s book and share advice with current students on how to make it in the publishing world. 

How College Works, a book co-authored by Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Daniel Chambliss and his former student Chris Takacs ’05, has been featured by The Chronicle of Higher Education as one of its book club selections for the last six weeks. In closing the book discussion on the Chronicle site and in social media via #ChronBooks, the publication is featuring a video of Chambliss.

This summer InsideHigherEd published two opinion pieces by Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Daniel F. Chambliss, both related to his research and resulting book How College Works. “Learn Your Students’ Names” appeared on August 26 and was preceded by “Beauty in Ugly Dorms” on June 25.

How College Works, a book co-authored by the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Daniel Chambliss, continues to receive attention in the national media, this time as a Chronicle of Higher Education “Book Club” selection. Chambliss, along with his co-author and former student Christopher Takacs ’05, will initiate discussions of the book’s chapters by supplying weekly entries on the publication’s site for six weeks. They will also be tweeting with the hashtag #ChronBooks.

Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, was interviewed on WNYU, New York University ‘s radio station, about his and his former student Chris Takacs'  new book, How College Works. The April 28 interview addressed how students can get the most out of college. Chambliss also described the ten-year study of nearly 100 students from their high school years to five years after college graduation that he and Takacs conducted.

Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, was interviewed for a feature in the April 13 issue of The New York Times Education Life section titled “What Makes a Positive College Experience?” The article offered a glimpse of the extensive results from Chambliss’ decade-long, Mellon-funded student study culminating in the newly published How College Works. Co-authored with Chambliss’ former student and current University of Chicago doctoral student Christopher Takacs ’05, the book was released by Harvard University Press in March.

Aaron Astor ’95, an associate professor of history at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., shared his knowledge of the Civil War in Tennessee with a group of Hamilton students volunteering at the Cumberland Trail for their Alternative Spring Break trip on March 24.

Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History Maurice Isserman and his former student Walter Cronkite IV ’11 discussed their new book Cronkite's War: His World War II Letters Home during an hour-long interview on public radio station WOSU’s All Sides with Ann Fisher on May 28. WOSU is based in Columbus, Ohio. The segment was titled “The Way It Is: Life and Times of Walter Cronkite.”

Jason Paulino '06 has published his first novel, Chosen.  The novel's website describes Chosen as "a Young Adult's Science Fiction Adventure which follows the lives of three teenagers and their transformation from sixteen year old high school students to intergalactic gladiators."
