In the midst of midterm studying and final essays, students in the Chinese department gathered recently for a well-deserved break. Students from all four years gathered in the Tolles Pavilion to celebrate a belated Chinese New Year.

Matt Clark ’90 just released his album, called, “Beijing Band 2012: AMERICAN MANDARIN."

Mitchell Scher ’14 was a keynote speaker and a moderator at the first H100 commercial space conference that took place Oct. 21 in Dalian, China.

In just another example of the interesting and unpredictable ways in which Hamilton students choose to spend their time away from the hill, Alex Witonsky ’17 used his summer to conduct research on changes within Chinese cinema and the concept of rhythm. His project, the result of an Emerson Summer Collaborative Research Award, flung Witonsky as far as Beijing and Shanghai, and was conducted under the academic supervision of Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang.

“What a wonderful way to end the Yun-Fei Ji show,” proclaimed Wellin Museum of Art Director Tracy Adler as two articles, both celebrating Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe, appeared online during the final week of the exhibition. A stellar review titled Yun-Fei Ji’s Ghost Stories of the Living, was published on June 29 by Hyperallergic, and an artist interview, Yun-Fei Ji: ‘I’m pessimistic about China’, debuted on June 26 in Studio International.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art’s exhibition, Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe,  closes on July 2, but Reunions ’16 attendees have the opportunity to tour the show with Tracy L. Adler, museum director and exhibition curator, on Thursday, June 9, at 4 p.m. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday during reunion weekend.

Laura Becker ’16 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Taiwan. A Chinese major at Hamilton, she studied in Beijing during her junior year.

John Liebman ’18 was selected as a delegate to the China Leadership Summit, a student-run conference co-hosted by Duke and North Carolina Universities.

Two exhibitions, Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe and Pure Pulp: Contemporary Artists Working in Paper at Dieu Donné, open at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a free, public reception from 4 – 6 p.m. Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe, curated by Wellin Museum Director Tracy Adler, will be open through July 2. Pure Pulp will be open until April 20. Both shows will travel to other venues.

Sixty-one percent of Hamilton students study off campus for a semester or full year. Last summer and fall, Annie Whitehurst ’16 was one of those students, studying abroad through Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program. After a summer and semester in Beijing, however, Whitehurst was not ready to leave China for good. She returned to Beijing this summer as an intern with the Foreign Commercial Service at the U.S. Embassy. With support from the Scott Steven Morris ’86 Fund managed by Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center, Whitehurst spent the summer planning events, conducting research, and enjoying more time in China.
