The Hamilton Mathletics team won first place in the annual Snow Bowl competition, edging out teams from Colgate University, Skidmore College and St. Lawrence University. Each team’s top five scores on the William Lowell Putnam Exam, given in December, were added together to determine the winner. 

The Hamilton Mathletics Team sat for the William Lowell Putnam exam on Saturday, Dec. 5.  Coached by Associate Professor of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra, the team had trained for the exam throughout the fall semester and consisted of a record-high number of 20 students. The Putnam exam is the most famous undergraduate mathematics competition in the country.  The exam is so challenging that most years the national median score is zero out of 120 possible points

Six Hamilton faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Emily Conover, economics, Andrew Dykstra, mathematics, John Eldevik, history, Nathan Goodale, anthropology, Adam Van Wynsberghe, chemistry, and Zhuoyi Wang, East Asian languages and literatures. The tenures are effective July 1. With the granting of tenure comes the title of associate professor.

A true passion for knowledge is of growing scarcity in the world today.  Such a passion extends beyond the simple desire to learn; it is a hunger to experience as well as comprehension, to grow in oneself and aid others in their journey. For Senior Fellow Robert Huben ’15, it is a passion he understands very well.

Associate Professor of Mathematics Michelle LeMasurier and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra were co-authors of two papers published in June.

Fifteen students from the Hamilton Mathletics Team sat for the William Lowell Putnam exam on Dec. 7. The students trained for the exam throughout the fall semester under the direction of Assistant Professors of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra and Courtney Gibbons.

Assistant Professors of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons and Andrew Dykstra presented invited research talks at the fall southeastern sectional meeting of the American Mathematical Society.

For the third year in a row, the Hamilton Mathletics team won first place in the annual Snow Bowl competition, edging out teams from Colgate University, Skidmore College and St. Lawrence University.  To determine the winner, each team in the competition added their top five scores on the William Lowell Putnam Exam.

Twelve students from Hamilton’s Mathletics team competed nationally on Dec. 1 in the William Lowell Putnam mathematics competition.  The students  on this year’s team are Jeremy Adelman ’13, Julian Aronowitz ’14, Sitong Chen ’16, Yifei Chen ’13, Robert Huben ’15, Jessie Shelton ’15,  Sunrose Shrestha ’14, Justin Smith ’14, Josh Snyder ’13, Yonghun Song ’13, Peter Talpey ’14 and Evan Van Tassell ’13. They’ve trained for the competition throughout the fall semester with Assistant Professor of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra.

Hamilton’s highest awards for teaching were presented on May 4 to five faculty members. Ian Rosenstein, Christopher Vasantkumar, Andrew Dykstra, Heather Buchman and Patty Kloidt were honored at the Class & Charter Day ceremony.
