Charlotte Carstens ’16 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Germany. Carstens, a German studies and world politics major, studied in Tübingen, Germany, during her junior year.

Eunice Lee ’16 has been awarded a 2016-17 Fulbright U.S. student grant to the European Union (EU).  She will research the EU’s food quality policy and how origin and quality regulations affect small farming communities. Lee is an environmental studies and French major and will be based at the French National Institute of Agricultural Research in Toulouse, France, throughout her research. She studied in France during her junior year.

The French government has promoted Professor of French John C. O'Neal  to the rank of commandeur in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (the Order of the French Academic Palms), the highest rank in this order, founded by Napoleon in 1808.

The Hispanic Studies Department recently took students to view works by Cuban American artist Emilio Sánchez at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute (MWPAI) in Utica.  Mary Murray, curator of modern and contemporary art at MWPAI, did a behind-the-scenes tour for Hispanic Studies students in February.

Last week, 28 students from Hamilton, Grinnell, Scripps and Smith College visited the Spanish region of Andalusia as part of the  Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain orientation trip. Andalusia is the most populated Spanish Autonomous Community.   Among other products, Andalusia is also known for its olive oil production.

During the fall semester, 12 Hamilton students taught Spanish to students at Clinton Elementary School. These Hamilton students participated in a training workshop in order to learn about teaching methods and to discuss lesson plans. The program began in October and continued through the end of the semester.

Tu le diras à ma mère, the French version of Tell This to My Mother by Professor of French Joseph Mwantuali, was published in Paris last week by Présence Africaine, a prestigious publishing house in the francophone African world.

Associate Professor of Japanese Kyoko Omori gave an invited talk at the University of Pittsburgh on October 15. Her lecture, “The Voice of Silent Film: Benshi Performance in Context and in the Classroom,” focused on the figure of the benshi, or live silent film narrator, as a way to chart the shifting sensorium of modernity in early 20th century Japan.

Professor of French John C. O’Neal’s article “The Potential Convergence of Religious and Secular Interests in Voltaire's Traité sur la tolérance” has been published in the journal Religion in the Age of Enlightenment, volume 5 (2015): 211-30.

A favorable review of Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang’s book Revolutionary Cycles in Chinese Cinema, 1951-1979 recently appeared in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, a scholarly journal devoted to the culture of modern and contemporary China. The book was published in 2014 by Palgrave Macmillan.
