An article co-authored by Assistant Professor of Biology Andrea Townsend was recently published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology. “Influence of host ecology and behavior on Campylobacter jejuni prevalence and environmental contamination risk in a synanthropic wild bird species” describes seasonal variation in the prevalence of Campylobacter infection of wild crows in Davis, Calif.

This summer, psychology majors Barbara Singhakiat ’17, Leah Pranschke ’17 and Jaclyn Zingman ’18 are conducting social psychology research under the supervision of Professor of Psychology Jennifer Borton. Their work examines reductions in working memory following ego threat in people with defensive self-esteem.

Director of Opportunity Programs and Interim Director of Diversity and Inclusion Phyllis Breland ’80 presented a webinar titled “Routine for Learning” on July 15. The presentation was part of the NYGEAR UP summer webinar series presented by The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) in New York.

This summer, Sanju Koirala ’19 is conducting research on creative writing as a tool for psychological healing in Nepal with literature and creative writing professor Jane Springer. Her research is funded by an Emerson summer research grant.

Emma Karsten ’18 and Olivia Shehan ’18 are staying close to campus this summer as they intern for Brian Hansen, Hamilton’s director of environmental protection safety and sustainability. The two are also working with Physical Plant’s grounds committee.

Ondine Jean-Baptiste ’17 is working at her dream internship this summer as the events and bookings intern for The Wild Honey Pie (TWHP), a collective of writers, photographers, musicians and music lovers in general to promote up-and-coming bands mainly in the New York City area. Her internship is supported through Jerome Gottlieb '64 Internship Fund, managed by the Career Center.

Building on data from  the 2016 Hamilton College Levitt Poll titled “The Russian Elite 2016,” a group of students this summer is researching the diffusion of foreign models into Russia through a Levitt Center grant.

Hamilton College President David Wippman announced the promotion of four faculty members to the rank of professor.  Heather Buchman, music; Stephen Ellingson, sociology; Ella Gant, art; and Chaise LaDousa, anthropology, were promoted effective July 1.

Symbols in the Wilderness: Early Masonic Survivals in Upstate New York, co-authored by Director of Special Collections Christian Goodwillie, began with a chance glance at a building as he drove to Cooperstown, N.Y. Intrigued by the structure, Western Star Lodge and now the Bridgewater Masonic Lodge, he became even more interested in the art work it once housed. Thus Goodwillie’s exploration of Masonic symbols – expressed in paintings, murals, textiles and graphics – began.
