Jeff Pliskin, Associate Professor of Economics and Director of the Levitt Center, and Derek Jones, Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, were invited attendees at the First International Economic Research Meeting of the Mondragon Cooperative Academic Community. The meeting was hosted by the Mondragon University business studies faculty in Oñati, Spain, Dec. 3-4.

A Hamilton trustee and his wife have donated $1 million to endow a need-based scholarship for students who are the first generation in their families to attend college. Recognizing the need for alumni to give back to the College, the donors, who wish to remain anonymous, have made their gift with the hope that it will encourage other alumni and supporters to make similar contributions in support of scholarship aid.

Alan Cafruny, Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, discussed the recent elections in Russia and the European Union's criticism of the election process on Jamaica's major news/talk radio station on Thursday, Dec. 6. Interviewing Cafruny were former Jamaican Minister of Tourism Anthony Abrahams and Trevor Munroe, government professor at the University of West Indies.

Professor of Art Bruce Muirhead has two paintings in a show titled "Urban Landscapes" that opened on Friday, Dec. 7, at Susan Maasch Fine Art, a gallery in Portland, Maine. There will be a reception at the gallery on Friday, Jan. 4.

Students in Government 285: Introduction to Environmental Politics, led by Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Peter Cannavo, will hold a mock Senate hearing on climate change legislation on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 4 – 7:30 p.m. in the Red Pit in the Kirner-Johnson Building. Cannavo says that attendees to this event should "expect informative expert testimony, spirited debate, self-serving political grandstanding and fascinating presentations covering everything climate-related, from distributive justice to alternative fuels to White House policy to oil reserves to international relations." This event is free and open to the public.

The Hamilton Board of Trustees has unanimously elected Alan G. (A.G.) Lafley, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Procter & Gamble Company, to be its next chairman, and George F. (Jeff) Little II, co-president of George Little Management LLC, as its next vice chairman.

Alan Cafruny, Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, spent three weeks in England in November as a Visiting Scholar at Oxford Brookes University where he presented several seminars. He also lectured on U.S.-European relations at the University of Bath and participated in a symposium and book launch of his most recent publication, Europe at Bay (co-authored by J. Magnus Ryner), at Oxford Brookes on Nov. 16.

Hamilton Assistant Dean of Faculty for Institutional Research Gordon Hewitt and Xavier University Assistant Professor of Political Science Mack Mariani presented "Indoctrination U.? The Effect of Faculty Ideology on Changes in Student Political Orientation" at the North East Association for Institutional Research 34th annual conference in New Brunswick, N.J., in November.

The Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has recognized the renovation of Skenandoa House with a merit award. EwingCole, the architectural firm responsible for the work, received the award for excellence in architectural design on Nov. 16.

Maurice Isserman, James L. Ferguson Professor of History, was a symposium speaker at the official opening of the Michael Harrington papers at NYU's Tamiment Library on Thursday, Nov. 15. He spoke along with Todd Gitlin of Columbia University and syndicated Washington Post columnist and Brookings Institution fellow E.J. Dionne.
