A co-written essay by Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus and Ashley Scheichet ’25, "A Contemporary Connections Option for Early Modern Syllabus Diversification," was recently published in Teaching Philosophy, the premiere journal for the scholarship of teaching and learning in philosophy.

Russell Marcus, the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Teaching Excellence, presented new research, “Learning Moments,” and received the AAPTs Award of Merit at the 50th anniversary workshop-conference of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers at Eastern Michigan University, July 22-26.

Russell Marcus, the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Teaching Excellence, recently presented his new research project, Why Teach Philosophy, at a conference at New Mexico State University organized by professor Mark Walker. The project examines philosophy teachers’ goals through interviews and workshops. In a session titled “Learning Moments,” Marcus invited participants to connect abstract learning goals to specific classroom activities, illustrating eight core philosophical tasks with examples from his own courses.

Hamilton College faculty, staff, and alumni continued to appear in national media outlets and prominent higher education publications in 2025 as thought leaders, providing their expertise on a wide range of topics.

Russell Marcus, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Philosophy, discussed the Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP) in an episode of the Tea for Teaching podcast titled “A Summer to Learn.”

The Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP), founded in 2018, has been a success from the beginning. First featured in an article in the American Philosophical Association Studies in Teaching in Philosophy, this year the Chronicle of Higher Education spotlighted the program in July.

Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus recently published an essay, "Free Speech and the Philosophy Classroom: The Wrong Question," on the APA blog. In the essay, he argues that free speech rights are inadequate to the task of improving conversations across disagreement in our classrooms and helping students to learn and grow.
