Emily Johnston, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany.

By the end of this approaching summer, campus construction, renovation and replacement projects completed by Hamilton’s Physical Plant will create energy savings equal to more than 1,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Laura Brueck, assistant professor of Hindi Literature and South Asian Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will present a lecture titled “Hindi Dalit Literature: Language and Political Consciousness” on Thursday, April 22, at 10:30 a.m., in Kirner-Johnson room 101. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean of Faculty for Diversity Initiatives Steve Yao presented a paper at the American Comparative Literature Association held in New Orleans from April 1-4.

Chandra Talpade Mohanty, a prominent postcolonial and transnational feminist theorist, will present a lecture on Thursday, April 22, at 4:10 p.m. in the Red Pit. The lecture is sponsored by the Cultural Education Center and is free and open to the public.

Hamilton students will have a taste of green eating this week as Bon Appétit Management Company celebrates Earth Day on April 22 by holding the third annual Low Carbon Diet Day. The first restaurant company to recognize the connection between food production and climate change, Bon Appétit will make significant menu changes on Thursday to try to teach the Hamilton community the ins and outs of sustainable eating.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, gave an invited talk titled “No Way Out: Tears in EU Unity” during a workshop on April 15 in Ottawa. The workshop, “Prosperity and Security: The Challenge of Uncertain Times,” was organized by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Public Safety Canada and Export Development Canada.

Alumni and students had the opportunity to experience the power of the college’s alumni network firsthand at the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Summit on April 16-18. Many presentations focused on the power of social media and other digital solutions to expand career opportunities.

Following a reception in the Science Center, five Bristol and Schambach Scholars presented their respective projects to a crowd of accepted students and parents on April 19. Scholars selected to these programs, honoring William M. Bristol ’17 and Hans H. Schambach ’43, are recognized for representing the highest level of personal and academic achievement and are chosen from each entering first-year class to Hamilton. All recipients have the option of pursuing a research project that includes a $4000 stipend. Each of the scholars who presented on April 19 went to a different location – some as close as Massachusetts and others as far as Hong Kong – to pursue their individual interests.

Scott Kretchmar, professor of exercise and sport science at Penn State University, will present a lecture, "Explaining Fascination With Sport: The High, The Low, and The in Between,” on Wednesday, April 21, at 8 p.m., in the Science Center's Kennedy Auditorium. The talk is free and open to the public.
