The Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College will open the summer exhibition season with Selections from Hamilton Collects American Art, from June 17 through August 4. Highlights include works by William Glackens, Rockwell Kent, Raphael Soyer, Marsden Hartley, Charles Burchfield, and others, focusing on twentieth century paintings. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

President George W. Bush has nominated James Howard Yellin '60 to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Burundi.

Kevin Kennedy '70, the outgoing chair of Hamilton's Board of Trustees, was honored during Reunion Weekend festivities. Kennedy was presented with a plaque during the Alumni Association's annual meeting on June 8. The text follows:

Matthew Backes, a 1993 graduate of Hamilton College, has been awarded a 2002 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The awards support original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.

Allison Kerbel, a rising sophomore from North Kingstown, R.I., recently had a short story published in Cicada. Kerbel's story, titled "Identity: Self and Sloth," describes a 7th grade gym class run. Cicada is a bimonthly magazine for teenagers and young adults ages 14 and up.

Donald Gingras '50 was presented with the Bell Ringer Award during the annual meeting of the Alumni Association during Reunion Weekend festivities.

Among the highlights of Reunion Weekend was the dedication of the Kirkland Marker on June 8. The marker was created to serve as "a tangible commemoration of the Kirkland experience." Designed and created by John von Bergen '63 and Ava Bromberg '02, the arch stands on the grass outside of McEwen Hall.

Samuel Babbitt, who served as the president of Kirkland College, delivered the inaugural Chuck Root Kirkland College lecture during Reunion Weekend festivities, June 7-9.

Russell Blackwood, the John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy, emeritus, treated an Alumni College class to a lively discussion titled "Islamic Thought Today: The Gates of Ijtihad."

The Oneida County Historical Society has renamed its "Living Legends" award in honor of Hamilton College life trustee Richard Couper '44. The award will be called the Richard W. Couper Living Legend Award in honor of Couper, who "has not only worked long hours on behalf of the Society, but also as a volunteer for many non-profit organizations," said Kevin Marken, of the Historical Society. The announcement was made at a press conference on Friday, June 6. Couper, and this year's Living Legends, Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito and area industrialist Earle Reed, will be honored at a dinner on September 5 at the Harts Hill Inn.
