Amit Taneja, director of the Days-Massolo Center, facilitated a conversation on inclusion at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica on Oct. 4. Taneja was invited by MVCC leaders to help create a dialogue on inclusive practices and strategies, and the presentation was also live-streamed to the MVCC Rome campus.

In a Religious Dispatches essay, “‘Cult’ Cinema Comes of Age,” Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate examined recent films that focus on cults including The Master, the latest in the group. In the Oct. 7 article, Plate described The Master as “emblematic of a new, more nuanced treatment of cults in the movies,” and “more or less … the story of L. Ron Hubbard and the birth of Scientology.”

What We Mean by Experience by Professor of Philosophy Marianne Janack was recently published by Stanford University Press.

Bipartisanship is generally in short supply in Washington.  However, Hamilton’s Program in Washington students got a glimpse of it at a briefing at the American Enterprise Institute on September 19.  Senators Ron Wyden (D, Oregon) and Marco Rubio (R, Florida) discussed a bill they had introduced, the Student Right to Know Before You Go Act.

An interesting aspect to bike riding is how a bicycle changes how the cyclist experiences his or her surroundings. In an urban area, biking can help define the relationship between cyclist and city. McKayla Dunfey ’13 is exploring this connection through her Senior Fellowship, titled “The Bicycle’s Influence: Changing Perceptions of Place and Space in Urban Environments.”

“The art world” is an abstract concept, consisting of careers in everything from law to painting to history. To an undergraduate, the concept of entering this fickle, fast-paced arena may be overwhelming or intimidating. During Fallcoming Weekend, Associate Professor of Art History Deborah Pokinski led an alumni panel discussion on “Careers in Art,” attracting dozens of students seeking advice. The discussion was held in the newly opened Wellin Museum of Art.

Chilly and sometimes dreary weather couldn't put a damper on Fallcoming 2012,  as Hamilton celebrated the opening the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, honored Dan Dietrich II '64 as Volunteer of the Year, and recognized students' scholarships at the Helen and Doane Comstock '27 Memorial Luncheon.

From his former home at the peak of College Hill to the blue New York State Historic Marker outside his birthplace at Buttrick Hall, Elihu Root looms large over the campus as one of Hamilton’s favorite sons. Yet his legacy extends far beyond College Hill: 2012 marks the centennial of Root’s 1912 Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneering work in international relations.

“The Ecocinema Experience” by Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald was published as the lead essay in Ecocinema Theory and Practice, a new collection edited by Stephen Rust, Salma Monani and Sean Cubitt.

A large and enthusiastic crowd lined up outside as The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art opened to the campus community on Oct. 4.  The formal dedication and ribbon-cutting will take place on Friday, Oct. 5, at 5:30 p.m., and a series of events are planned for the entire weekend.
