Assistant Professor of Sociology Jenny Irons participated in an invited panel on anti-civil rights violence in the south at the Southern Political Science Association Meetings, Jan. 8-10, in New Orleans. The interdisciplinary panel brought together scholars from law, political science and sociology to discuss their work on white violence against civil rights activists and black southerners during the civil rights era.

Professor of Chinese Hong Gang Jin presented a paper and chaired a panel at the 9th International Conference of Chinese Scholars Association on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in December. Her paper was titled "Task complexity and its effect on triggering negotiation of meaning" and the panel she chaired was on Second Language Research and Pedagogical Innovation. 

Jon Bellona '03 was featured in a short article in the February issue of Runner's World magazine in "What It Takes To … Run 4,000 miles for fallen soldiers." Bellona organized Run for the Fallen, a 4,000-mile cross-country relay last summer in honor of his Hamilton roommate Michael Cleary '03 and all of the soldiers who have lost their lives in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Allison Eck '12 contributed a column to The Buffalo News titled "winter break a surreal feeling" (1/7/09).  Eck writes occasional columns for the newspaper about her experiences as a college freshman. 

Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu presented "Lost in Translation: The Economics Ph.D. Pipeline for U.S. and Foreign Applicants" in a session on "Research in Economic Education" at the American Economic Association meetings in San Francisco on Jan. 4.

Kyla Gorman '09 was profiled in a story about her senior fellowship in her hometown newspaper, The Weekly Almanac (Honesdale, Pa., 1/7/09). As one of five senior fellows this year at Hamilton, Gorman is exempt from taking a normal course load in the conventional curriculum and spends the year conducting independent study. Like the others she will present a public lecture to the College community at the close of the fellowship year. 

Hamilton College is front and center in an episode of Heroes, the popular science fiction television drama, scheduled to air on Monday, Feb. 2, on NBC. The College is mentioned as one of the best schools in the country along with Georgetown University and Smith College in a scene in which a young woman is considering various options. The camera pans several admissions brochures and Hamilton's brochures are prominently displayed.  Alumna Rebecca "Reba" Rosenthal '00, who works on prop placement for Heroes, arranged for the inclusion of the Hamilton brochures in the scene. The show is one of the top 20 highest rated programs on television and a favorite among critics.

Graham Cummiskey '08 was featured in an article in The New Straits Times (Persekutuan, Malaysia) about her position teaching English to students in Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur. Cummiskey was quoted as saying, "I think that when there's face to face communication, people from different backgrounds understand each other better. We want the people here to know that we are not who they see on television," she added.

The Hamilton College Choir, under the direction of G. Roberts Kolb, will perform with the University Glee Club of New York City at its annual Gala Members Concert on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m., in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York. The concert will be followed by an Afterglow reception on the Grand Promenade at Avery Fisher Hall. Hamilton's choir will perform "Ave Maria," "Le Chant des oiseaux" (The Song of the Birds), "Pater noster," "My Lord, What a Mornin'," "Jubilate Deo" and "Babylone." 

Maurice Isserman, James L. Ferguson Professor of History, will join Everest pioneer Tom Hornbein, author of Everest: The West Ridge, for a presentation on the history of Himalayan mountain climbing on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in Golden, Colorado.
