Anyone who has participated in one of Hamilton Association for Volunteering Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) days of service knows that the adage “the early bird catches the worm” readily applies to the sign-up process. By 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, volunteers had already begun lining up at tables in the Fillius Events Barn, eager to match themselves with the sites of their choices for HAVOC’s annual Make a Difference Day.

The fall 2011 Humanities Forum at Hamilton will address the topic of “Translation and Cultural Exchange.”  As communication becomes increasingly international via the media, translation - especially language translation - is vital to understanding politics, social life, religion and more. This forum offers many perspectives that will challenge audiences to think about how meaningful words, sentences, and paragraphs can be translated from one language to another. All events are free and open to the public.

The Hamilton community observed the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a silent march and candlelight vigil at the Chapel on Sunday, Sept. 11.  Early in the day, students from the Hamilton Republicans and Democrats placed 3,000 small memorial flags along Martin’s Way, the pathway of the vigil march.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents its annual Jazz Kick-Off Concert on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Nicole L. Snyder and Taylor P. Adams ’11 recently published a book chapter on the Dimroth reaction in Jie Jack Li’s Named Organic Reaction series book Named Reactions in Heterocyclic Chemistry II.

Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover was an invited speaker at the Impact Evaluation Network meeting that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in August.

Bruce Muirhead, the William R. Kenan Professor of Art, has work on exhibit in two juried shows, one on the West Coast at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA) in Santa Anna, Calif., and the other on the East Coast at the Circle Gallery in Annapolis, Md.

SUNY Cortland Professor of Anthropology Tiantian Zheng will speak on "Male Clients in China's Sex Industry" on Monday, Sept. 12, at 4:10 p.m., in the Red Pit (Kirner-Johnson 127).

Hamilton College will observe the 10th anniversary of the September 11  terrorist attacks that took close to 3,000 American lives, with events on Sunday, Sept. 11.  The College will honor the memory of Arthur J. Jones III,’84, Adam J. Lewis ’87, and Sylvia San Pio Resta ’ 95 – Hamilton alumni who tragically lost their lives in the attacks on America.

The fall F.I.L.M. (Forum for Image and Languages in Motion) series lineup has been announced. Organizer and Hamilton Visiting Professor Scott MacDonald has directed the film series for more than 20 years. All events are free and open to the public.
