Maggie Ryan, a rising junior, is spending the summer working on an Emerson project that investigates non-commutative algebra. She is one of 200 Hamilton students who are doing summer research or an internship supported by the College.

Omar Beesley '20 and Spencer Woolfson '20 study "word embedding," a modern technique that associates words with vectors and then uses linear algebra to discover links among words in large data sets.

Colin Day ’16 is spending his summer at the National Museum of Mathematics in Manhattan, helping to tackle what he believes to be an all-too-common popular aversion to mathematics in today’s society. Day had discovered this opportunity through the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath’s) Facebook page. His internship is supported by the Monica Odening Student Internship and Research Fund in Mathematics, managed by Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center.

Jonah Boucher ’17 is undertaking research this summer with a team of students under Associate Professor of Biology Michael McCormick analyzing various chemical and microbiological properties of Green Lake in Onondaga County, N.Y. Green Lake is notable for its meromictic properties, meaning that it is separated into two major layers of water, one well-oxygenated and one anoxic, that do not mix, even after the passage of long periods of time.

A true passion for knowledge is of growing scarcity in the world today.  Such a passion extends beyond the simple desire to learn; it is a hunger to experience as well as comprehension, to grow in oneself and aid others in their journey. For Senior Fellow Robert Huben ’15, it is a passion he understands very well.

With the digitization of information, cyberspace is a developing network that’s changing how we live. In 2009, the first digital currency, Bitcoin, was invented.  Bitcoin has been called a “decentralized virtual currency” by some economists, due to the fact that it is transferred from one user to another, called peer-to-peer or P2P, without the use of any central bank.  Sitong Chen ’16, with Professor of Economics Christophre Georges, worked this summer on an Emerson project, “Analysis of the Internet-born Currency: The Birth of Bitcoin.”

Amy Defnet ’16, through the support of the Scott Steven Morris ’86 Fund, is interning this summer at Aadmi Consulting in Boston. Aadmi, a human resources consulting firm, specializes in helping its clients develop employee recruitment strategies and adhere to the confines of local tax and labor laws. Aadmi’s clients consist mostly of small businesses local to the Boston area as well as international non-profit organizations.

Colin Henneberger ’14 is fully embracing the New York City internship experience this summer by working at Pioneer Financial.  After waking up at 6:30 a.m., catching a train, transferring to the subway, and walking from the station, he finally arrives at the wealth advisory firm to start his workday at 9 a.m.
