Holi, an Indian festival of colors, was celebrated for the first time at Hamilton on May 4.  It marks the beginning of spring, commemorates various Hindu traditions and is time of disregarding social norms and indulging in general fun with family and friends. The throwing of colored powder transcends all barriers of discrimination so that everyone looks the same and universal unity is reaffirmed.

Wendy Doniger, the Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School, will present the Hansmann Lecture titled “The Political Framework of Gender in the Kamasutra,” on Monday, March 4, at 4:10 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium.

Observed from the West, Hinduism appears as a complex, heterogeneous, polytheistic amalgamation of religious practices. But just below its multifaceted interior lies a concept that Westerners understand only too well: the control of colonization. Through an Emerson grant and the guidance of Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi, Kate Harloe ’12 will spend the summer investigating the roots of Hinduism as well as its contemporary incarnations in Indian society.
