While things, or objects, are physically tangible, they can also be an abstract gateway to looking at the world from a fresh perspective and liberating the mind from selfishness. Dr. Ian Bogost, award-winning author of Alien Phenomenology, delivered a lecture to the Hamilton community about the pressing importance of discovering substantive meaning in everyday objects to enrich our daily lives.

Students in Janelle Schwartz’s Reading the Extreme in World Adventure Narratives class are doing a lot more than reading this semester. Schwartz, a 1997 Hamilton graduate and visiting assistant professor of comparative literature, has teamed up with The Hamilton Outing Club (HOC) to bring experiential learning to her students.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Janelle A. Schwartz ’97 presented a lecture on March 23 at Counterpath in Denver. The talk, based on her book Worm Work: Recasting Romanticism (2012), incorporated both science and literature in an examination of the world of worms.

Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz was an invited speaker on March 9 at the Brock University Archaeological Society’s Scholarly Symposium “Classics in Education: Ancient and Modern.” Her talk was titled “Academic Activism: Teaching Classics at Marcy Correctional Facility.”

Two events featuring Cultural Odyssey’s Rhodessa Jones and Idris Ackamoor will take place on Monday, Feb. 25, and Wednesday, Feb 27. The events are free and open to the public and no tickets are required.

A book co-authored by Peter J. Rabinowitz, the Sidney Wertimer Professor of Comparative Literature, was among those selected by Choice as an “Outstanding Academic Title” for 2012.

Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart announced in an e-mail to the campus community the death of long-time Professor Carol Rupprecht: I write with the sad news that Professor of Comparative Literature Emeritus Carol Schreier Rupprecht died tragically Wednesday, Nov. 15, near her home in the Adirondacks. She was 73.

Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz presented her work on the Hamilton Oneida Prison Education (HOPE) Project at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States.

A book co-authored by Peter Rabinowitz, the Sidney Wertimer Professor of Comparative Literature, was the subject of a positive review in Choice (Oct. 2012). Narrative theory: core concepts and critical debates, by David Herman et. al. ( Ohio State, 2012) is called “a wonderful resource for introducing students to four major approaches to the study of narrative and the major debates on the subject of narrative.”

Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Janelle Schwartz is the author of a new book, Worm Work: Recasting Romanticism, published this month by University of Minnesota Press.
