Baillie Riggs ’20 has been awarded a Freeman-ASIA grant for study abroad through Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program during this summer and the 2018-19 academic year.

My time in Beijing offered a new and crucial perspective on global economics and politics. You can read about China’s performance and develop a good understanding of how the economy and political structure function, but nothing replaces being on the ground and learning first-hand.

The Associated Colleges in China program provided me with an opportunity to immerse myself in a different environment and reflect on my own identity as a Chinese-American.

Studying abroad in Beijing gave me the opportunity to improve my speaking skills. Without an external factor to encourage further practice of the language, my speaking skills would not have improved.

Juniors Andre Burnham and Derian De La Torre have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships for study abroad this summer. Burnham will attend the Babilonia Language School in Sicily and De La Torre will study in Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China program in Beijing.

Sixty-one percent of Hamilton students study off campus for a semester or full year. Last summer and fall, Annie Whitehurst ’16 was one of those students, studying abroad through Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program. After a summer and semester in Beijing, however, Whitehurst was not ready to leave China for good. She returned to Beijing this summer as an intern with the Foreign Commercial Service at the U.S. Embassy. With support from the Scott Steven Morris ’86 Fund managed by Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center, Whitehurst spent the summer planning events, conducting research, and enjoying more time in China.

For the fifth year, Hamilton College is the recipient of STARTALK funding to operate two programs for Chinese language this summer — a Chinese teacher development program and a week-long intensive Chinese immersion program for students in grades 8 and 9.
