Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten attended the Scialog conference “Molecules Come to Life” at Biosphere 2 near Tucson, Az., March 12-15. Scialog was a multi-disciplinary gathering of physicists, chemists and biologists sponsored by Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA) and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten was recently named a Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA). The awards are granted to teacher-scholars of chemistry, physics and astronomy through a peer-review process.

Ken A. Dill, Distinguished Professor of Physics & Chemistry at Stony Brook University, will visit campus this Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4-5, as the college's second Robert S. Morris Class of 1976 Visiting Fellow. Dill, a member of the National Academy of Sciences who has been honored with numerous prestigious awards in his field, will present two lectures, "The Deep Innovation Engine of Science in America" at 4 p.m. on Thursday and "A Physical Chemist's Look at How Cells Grow and Evolve" on Friday at 3 p.m. 

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten has been awarded a Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation Teacher-Scholar Award.  The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences at undergraduate institutions. The award is based on accomplishment in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching, and provides an unrestricted research grant of $60,000. Cotten is one of seven national awardees and the first Hamilton faculty member to receive the award.

Ten current and former Hamilton Chemistry Department faculty members co-authored a chapter titled “A Departmental Focus on High Impact Undergraduate Research Experiences” in a recently published edition of the American Chemical Society Symposium Series dedicated to “Developing and Sustaining a Successful Undergraduate Research Program.”

Seven Hamilton faculty members were recognized for their research and creative successes with the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards, presented by Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds on Class & Charter Day on May 12. The awards recognize individual accomplishment but reflect a richness and depth of scholarship and creative activity across the entire faculty.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten gave an invited seminar presentation at the University of Maryland (Shady Grove) on March 24. Her talk titled “Bridging Structure, Dynamics, and Function in Antimicrobial Peptides: Insights from Studying Piscidin” focused on her ongoing research on how antimicrobial peptides recognize and kill bacteria.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten is the corresponding author of a paper that was selected as the cover story in the March 5 print edition of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS).

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten co-authored a chapter in the book  Advances in Biological Solid-State NMR: Proteins and Membrane-Active Peptides. The publication was just announced by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten is the corresponding author of a paper that was published online on Jan. 10 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). The results presented are the culmination of more than five years of work as part of Cotten’s National Science Foundation CAREER grant.
