Assistant Professor of Dance and Movement Studies Casey Avaunt recently performed in the inaugural three-day Naples International Dance Festival at the Norris Center in Naples, Fla.

Forty-five new faculty members have entered Hamilton’s ranks, including nine tenure-track professors in anthropology, art, computer science, dance and movement studies, economics, government, mathematics and statistics, music, and Russian. They join 31 visiting professors and lecturers, and four teaching fellows for the 2024-25 academic year.

Many students weigh how to balance their contrasting interests, whether they be STEM, the arts, or the humanities. Maggie Maselli ’24, however, has found the key to combining all of these seemingly different disciplines.

Hamilton welcomes 48 new faculty members, including nine new tenure-track, in addition to visiting professors, lecturers, and teaching fellows for the 2022-23 academic year. The College is in the midst of a 10-year period, begun in 2015, during which nearly half of its faculty will reach average retirement age.

Neuroscience, Dance, Mathematics, Music. Recent graduates Toscana Ogihara ’22 and Anthony Christiana ’22 took this unlikely combination of majors and collaborated on creating an original score for Ogihara’s dance thesis.

Hamilton salutes four distinguished members of the faculty who retired this year after a combined 152 years of service to the College. They are Cynthia Domack, professor of geosciences; Elaine Heekin, professor of dance and movement studies; Elizabeth Jensen, professor of economics; and David Thompson, professor of physical education and director of campus wellness.

An interest in Japanese language and culture led Faby Alvarez ’22 to participate in the 72nd Japan-America Student Conference (JASC), a program that brings students from the two countries together to research, study, and discuss Japan-U.S. relations across a breadth of topics. The highly competitive program emphasizes building connections across cultures through reflective, educational conversations.

Using skills she learned in a Hamilton first-year career development program, Fabiola (Faby) Alvarez ’22 secured two summer internships: teaching children how to dance and helping Japanese students learn English.

The respiratory disease center at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston seems to be a meeting point for Hamilton alumni, as Deb Gakpo ’19 is the third alumna to take a job there.
