Angelica Ramos ’20, in a sentiment mirrored by most qualified educators, believes that empowering members of low-income communities is a task that starts with empowering children.

Emily Lei ’19 is interested in a career in nursing, and this summer she’s gaining vital career-related experience to help her down that path. She is interning with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York’s (VNSNY) Hospice department, specializing in cardiology. Through her internship, which is supported by the Career Center’s First Year Forward program, she’s been able to work on building a diverse skill set and is gaining a lot of insight into the profession.

As a creative writing major, Eva Lynch-Comer ’19 knows a lot about what makes a good story. This summer, she is putting that talent to good use as an intern at the Hannigan Salky and Getzler Literary Agency, a boutique agency in Chelsea, N.Y. Lynch-Comer spends her time reading manuscripts, helping to decide which works will move forward and end up published.

Daniela Gonzalez ’19 began her first year at Hamilton with a surprising amount of experience in the medical world. While attending South Texas High School for Health Professions, a high school that specializes in preparing its students for health careers, she volunteered at a hospital and shadowed both a cardiologist and gastroenterologist. One might think she’d take a well-deserved break over her first summer, but instead she is completing not one, but two internships.

Twenty rising sophomores are spending the summer completing career-related experiences through First-Year Forward, through Hamilton’s Career Center. At the beginning of the year these students committed to regular group meetings, career counseling session, and skill-building assignments. Their goals are to develop skills in communication, networking and interviewing, and to assess their own strengths and career interests. Internships this summer will help them to define and build toward career goals. Betsy Ramirez ’19 is interning in the marketing and communications division of New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA).

As a high school student, Andres Aguilar ’19 participated in the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS), an intensive summer program that prepares underrepresented students for admission to selective colleges. Now, after his first year at Hamilton, through the First Year Forward program, he is returning to PAYS to work as a trainer, helping students to succeed in the same way he has succeeded. His plans don’t stop there, either; Aguilar has big goals for helping even more high school students in the future.

For many college students finding an internship – especially a fulfilling internship related to their career interests – can be challenging. This summer Emily Han ’19 has not only obtained her own meaningful internship, she’s helping other students find their own as well. She’s working for Vocate, an online platform that connects students with employers by providing curated internship and entry-level job matches.
