Russell Marcus, the Chauncey Truax Post-Doctoral Fellow in philosophy, is the author of a short sketch of mathematician and philosopher David Hilbert's philosophical views in the March issue of The Reasoner. The publication is an interdisciplinary monthly digest highlighting research on reasoning, inference and method in philosophy, logic, artificial intelligence, statistics, cognitive science, law, psychology, mathematics and the sciences.

About 60 Hamilton students and staff members participated in the annual America's Greatest Heart Run and Walk on Saturday, March 7, at Utica College. These volunteers joined a group of some 8,500 people in walking and running between three and five miles. The annual event raises money and awareness for the American Heart Association and its fight against heart disease and stroke. Hamilton has fielded a team for many years. Hamilton team captains were Colleen Pellman, John O'Neal and Ernest Williams.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten recently presented a research talk at the 53d annual Biophysical Society Meeting in Boston. Her talk titled "High-Resolution Structure of Piscidin in Aligned Lipid Bilayers: Implications for Antimicrobial Mode of Action" was part of a platform on membrane-active peptides.

Anna Oldfield, Asian Studies Postdoctoral Fellow and visiting assistant professor of comparative literature, presented at the 11th annual Women's History Conference "Gender and Power in the Muslim World" at Sarah Lawrence College on March 6-7.

Three Hamilton College athletes competed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III championships at Tufts University's Gantcher Center on March 6.

Two Hamilton debate teams competed at a tournament at Skidmore College on Feb. 27 and 28. Chris Smith '11 and Andrew Menges '12 comprised Hamilton Buff, and Sarah Krieger '11 and Hadley Keller made up Hamilton Blue. The two teams competed against 23 other teams from schools including Harvard, Yale, MIT and Cornell.

Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, gave a talk titled "The Economic Impact of Offline Teams" at ETEO, Mondragon University, in Oñate, Spain, on March 5. Jones' presentation was based on a paper written with Colgate professor Takao Kato available as a working paper from the Institute for the Study of Labor.

Senior classics major Casey Green's senior seminar paper has been selected for the Eta Sigma Phi panel at the 2010 APA meeting in California. Eta Sigma Phi is the national classics honor society and the APA is the American Philological Association, the national professional organization for classicists. In addition, senior Madeline Ware's paper received honorable mention for the Eta Sigma Phi convention later this month in Memphis. Hamilton was the only school to have two papers recognized.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Shelley McConnell spoke on U.S.-Cuba relations and the prospects for reform under the Obama administration at Utica College on March 4. She discussed the shake-up of Raul Castro's cabinet in which he fired eight ministers closely associated with Fidel Castro and replaced them with former military officers who are personally loyal to Raul.

The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Auction on March 5 drew Hamilton students and community members to the annual event designed to raise money to help fund the nine volunteer trips that begin next Friday. This year 100 Hamilton students will participate in ASB, the largest number of volunteers ever.
