Participants in the Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) recently visited the Spanish region of Galicia as part of their orientation trip. Twenty-six students from Hamilton, Colby, Grinnell, Scripps, Swarthmore, Davidson, Bates, Bryn Mawr and Williams are participating in HCAYS.

During an internship with the district attorney in her hometown, Silvia Radulescu ’17 saw how invested citizens become in their community when leaders and government institutions are dedicated to public service.

Jennifer Ambrose and Amy Gaffney have stepped into the roles of director of the Writing Center and Oral Communication Center respectively, filling the vacancies left by two longtime center leaders. Writing Center Director Sharon Williams and Oral Communication Center Director Jim Helmer retired this summer after serving, collectively, more than 60 years at the College.

The Hamilton College Performing Arts Series opens with baritone Jubilant Sykes, on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts. The Grammy-nominated baritone brings a new dimension to the traditional vocal recital by drawing on gospel and jazz influences. Sykes is joined by guitarist Christopher Parkening and pianist Mark Rice for a unique performance that ranges from classical, Broadway and jazz standards to spirituals.

Teach For America released its ninth annual list of the schools contributing the greatest number of alumni to its 2016 teaching corps and Hamilton College is among the top 10 small colleges and universities. This is the third year Hamilton has been named to the list.

Sidney Wertimer Associate Professor for Excellence in Advising and Mentorship Wei-Jen Chang published a chapter in Biocommunication of Ciliates, released recently by Springer. “Interactions Between Parasitic Ciliates and Their Hosts: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and Cryptocaryon irritans as Examples” was co-authored by Kassandra Zaila ’15 and Deanna Cho ’15.

The Fillius Jazz Archive presents a film, Joe Williams: A Portrait in Song, on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall. The concert documentary was filmed in Wellin Hall on September 7, 1996. This 20th anniversary screening is free and open to the public.

For many, summer vacation is synonymous with sunny beaches and relaxation.  Genevieve Caffrey ’17 however saw an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens this summer as an intern at a prominent non-profit child advocacy organization, the Children’s Defense Fund. Her internship was supported by the Levitt Center.

Tatiana Bierut ’18 is first author on a paper published in Prevention Science, the official publication of the Society for Prevention Research.  The paper “Exploring Marijuana Advertising on Weedmaps, a Popular Online Directory” resulted from her 2015 summer research project.  

“Founding Fathers spirit found in Kaepernick protest,” an opinion piece published by The Hill on Sept. 1, argued that the San Francisco quarterback’s decision to remain seated during the national anthem was an expression of his right to freedom of speech. This is the third opinion piece written by Charles Dunst '18 that The Hill has published in the last two months.
