Alfred Kelly, the Edgar B. Graves Professor of History, was one of three Americans invited to participate in the First Historical Meeting of the Museum of the War of 1870 and the Annexation International Symposium in Gravelotte, France.

The National Museum of American History has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). So in the spirit of JAM, Hamilton’s Fillius Jazz Archive is featuring one artist daily on the news site along with that individual’s archived audio interview. Today’s featured artist is Lionel Hampton.

Shelley Haley, professor of classics and Africana studies and director of the Africana Studies Program, spent the week of March 24-28 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) as a Melvyn Hill Visiting Scholar-in-Residence.

April 6 marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide; yet, in light of the current conflict in Syria, many question the lessons learned from history. Ambassador Prudence Bushnell, who served as deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs during the time of the Rwandan genocide, gave a Levitt Center-sponsored lecture on April 2, with Emily Willard, project coordinator for the Genocide Prevention Project.

When celebrated Indian street photographer Pranlal K. Patel died in January at the age of 104, he left behind an impressive legacy and 70 years worth of works. An exhibit at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art has brought new life to some of the artist’s images from the early twentieth century.

William D. Tifft ’14, a senior in the Geosciences Department, presented a poster titled “A Reference Collection of Middle Devonian, Upper Hamilton Group Brachiopods from the Geer Road Quarry in Eaton, New York” at the 49th Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America - Northeastern Section.Tifft's work in paleontology was presented as a poster in the Geologic Education session and his abstract was published in GSA Abstracts with Programs Vol. 46, No. 2.

Angel David Nieves, associate professor and co-director of the Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) was awarded an NEH Office of Digital Humanities Start-Up Grant of $59,510 for "Dangerous Embodiments: Theories, Methods, and Best Practices for Historical Character Modeling in Humanities 3D Environments."

Hamilton College Performing Arts continues the spring performing arts series with jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon on Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.

Ten Hamilton students interested in the art market visited Christie’s fine arts auction house in New York City on March 28. A massive, vibrant Sol LeWitt mural greeted attendees at Christie’s headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza and foreshadowed an exciting day. Mary Evans, director of Hamilton’s Career Center, remarked, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the art auction business in an internationally pre-eminent setting.”
