In a culture where eReaders and tablets become increasingly popular and bookstores continue to go out of business, the age of printed material may soon be coming to an end. While many succumb to the convenience of modern technology, self-proclaimed book enthusiast Aaron Jaffe, an English professor at the University of Louisville, stands in stark opposition to this digitalization of texts.

Peggy Piesche, visiting instructor of German and Russian studies, participated in the first public event of the newly founded Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies.

Twelve Hamilton seniors were elected on Feb. 19 to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society. A chapter written by Professor of History Thomas Wilson was published in the Chinese-language publication Western Scholarship on Chinese History.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten attended the 57th Annual Biophysical Society Meeting in Philadelphia and served as a panelist for a session titled “Funding Opportunities for Faculty at Predominantly Undergraduate Institutions.”

Director André Robert Lee will screen his autobiographical film, The Prep School Negro, on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m., in the Red Pit, Kirner-Johnson Building. Lee will host a discussion with the audience following the film. The screening is sponsored by the Days-Massolo Center and is free and open to the public.

Professor of Dance Elaine Heekin published “Movement Classes for Mature Adults: A Creative Approach” in Activity Director Today magazine. According to Heekin, “the article addresses various movement experiences that offer a refreshing approach as opposed to a generic workout.”

Poet Martha Rhodes read from her work as part of the Spring 2013 Reading Series on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. The reading is free and open to the public.

Patrick Geary, a leading historian of the middle ages from Princeton University, will present a lecture titled “The Dilemma of Translation: Sacred Scripture and Sacred Power in the Early Middle Ages,” on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 4:10 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium at Hamilton College.  His lecture is sponsored by Hamilton College’s Humanities Forum and is free and open to the public.

Arlene Blum, founder and executive director of the Green Science Policy Institute (GSPI), will deliver a lecture titled “The Flame Retardant Dilemma: Balancing Fire Prevention, Human Health, and Environmental Protection,” on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. Blum’s lecture is sponsored by the Environmental Studies department and is free and open to the public.
