Three Hamilton professors, Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert, Associate Professor of Government Peter Cannavo and Assistant Professor of Government Erica de Bruin have participated recently in interviews in their areas of expertise with media outlets based in New York, California and London. Here are brief summaries and links to them. 

Thirty Hamilton seniors were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society, at the May meeting. Students are elected to membership in recognition of their exceptional academic achievement in fulfilling the goals and purposes of the College.

Joe Jensen '15 (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro HS North) and Caroline Walton ’15 (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles Central School) received the 2015 Jack B. Riffle Awards at Hamilton College’s senior varsity athlete awards dinner on May 21. 

Alex Mitko ’16 presented a poster on May 18 at the Vision Sciences Society (VSS) annual meeting in St. Pete Beach, Fla. The poster, titled “An EEG Study of Illusory Conjunctions,” was co-authored by Mitko and Assistant Professor of Psychology Alexandra List, along with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Boston University School of Medicine.

Hamilton’s Baccalaureate ceremony on Saturday May 23, at 3 p.m., and Commencement on Sunday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m. will be webcast live.

Carl Rubino, the Winslow Professor of Classics, presented “Somewhere over the Rainbow: Spartacus, Gladiator, and the American Dream” to teachers participating in Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA). He presented to teachers in the upstate region on May 19 in Rochester and to downstate region teachers on May 20 in New York City.

This past semester, 18 Hamilton students taught Spanish to students at Clinton Elementary School. These Hamilton students attended a two-day training workshop prior to beginning the program to learn about teaching methods and share ideas for activities. The program began on February 9 and continued until the end of April. 

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio will feature a reading by Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology,  on Friday, May 22, as part of the station’s Academic Minute, a nationally syndicated program. Chambliss’ piece focuses on the key ingredients of a college experience that keep students engaged and motivated. The program is broadcast locally on WAMC at 90.3 FM at 7:34 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. and can also be accessed at InsideHigherEd.com here.

Six outstanding Hamilton women scientists have been named Clare Boothe Luce Undergraduate Research Scholars for the upcoming summer.  The awardees this year are Alex Betrus ’18, Katherine Fuzesi ’17, Vi Pham ’18, Linnea Sahlberg ’17, Isabella Schoning ’16, and Emily Sears ’17.

At the annual meeting of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies in Los Angeles in March, several seminars and round tables focused on “The Eighteenth Century on Film.”  John O'Neill, the Edmund A. LeFevre Professor of English emeritus chaired a seminar on the topic that included a discussion of the 2013 film "Belle."
