Africa is home to some of the fastest developing economies and up-and-coming global leaders, as Ivy Phoebe Akumu ’15, an economics major, knows. This summer, Akumu is a corporate business intern with the Commercial Bank of Africa Ltd. (CBA), one of East Africa’s largest privately owned banks. Her internship is located in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Kenya, and is sponsored through the Summer Internship Support Fund.

As members of Hamilton’s Class of 2018 prepare to return to campus for Orientation, some of the pre-orientation groups shared photos of their programs as they explored  attractions in Utica and the Adirondacks and learned about bee-keeping and battlegrounds.

Meandering through the placid halls of an art museum, many guests appreciate the aesthetics of the exhibition and its pieces. However, few may realize the amount of fundraising, work and time it takes to procure, produce and put on one of these exhibits. Isabel Dau ’15, a classical studies major, is spending the summer interning at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Conn., with support from the Richard & Patsy Couper Fund.

Frank Anechiarico ’71, the Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law, will take over as managing editor of the journal Public Integrity (PIN) on Sept. 1. He has served on the editorial board for several years.

Roughly every five or six years, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) publishes a report that indicates the current impact of climate change and consequent policy recommendations. The most recent report, the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, contains three separate reports based on the IPCC’s working groups. Ming Chun Tang ’16, under the guidance of Professor of Government Peter Cannavo, is researching online news media’s coverage of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report for his Levitt Fellowship this summer.

Three longtime members of Hamilton’s science faculty retired during the last academic year. Eugene Domack, Timothy Elgren and Ernest Williams had a combined 79 years of service at Hamilton.

The untrod sands of the Egyptian Deserts hold a mystery much older than the construction of the pyramids: hundreds of naturally formed “desert eyes” unblinkingly turned toward the sky for tens of millions of years. Yet, despite their age, these structures have almost no topography; in fact, until the advent of Google Earth, these formations, which lie in the desert west of the Nile, were never studied. Josh Wolpert ’16, is working with Professor of Geosciences Barbara Tewksbury on the Desert Eyes Project, funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Patrick Reynolds, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2014-15 academic year, including six tenure-track appointments, 24 visiting professors and instructors, and three teaching fellows.

Courtney Smith ’86, P’16 has created several internship opportunities for Hamilton students this summer through the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation in Lewisburg, W.V. As the executive director of the foundation, Smith contacted local nonprofits to see if any of the organizations would be interested in taking on summer interns. Several offered to host interns and Meredith Garner ’15, Liz DaBramo ’15, and Medjine Lucien ’16— were selected. 

Every day, one billion viewers tune in for the variety of shows broadcasted by China Central Television (CCTV).  One subchannel, CCTV America is the English-language news channel run by Chinese state broadcaster, developing programming for English-speaking audiences worldwide. Liza Strauss ’15 is interning with CCTV America in Washington D.C. this summer.
