In publishing circles, “essential” isn’t a word to be tossed around lightly. Although every academic book advances our understanding of its subject in some way, there are not many books that are so vital to a field that scholars can’t work without them. 

Hamilton College will host the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, a collection of short films about mountain sports and culture, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium in the Kirner-Johnson Building.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents The Voice: New Jazz Artists with “Doc” Woods on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn.

Mary B. O'Neill, former director of the Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center at Hamilton, participated in the Joint Math Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of America conference, in January in Baltimore.

Fourteen Hamilton College seniors were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society, on Feb. 12.

Due to snow conditions, Hamilton College will delay opening until 10 a.m. to allow physical plant personnel the opportunity to clear walkways and parking lots. Employees should delay their arrival to campus until 10 a.m. Classes normally held before 10 a.m. are cancelled for the day.

The Hamilton College men’s ice hockey team will host its first Wounded Warrior Project game on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., when the Continentals host Tufts University at Russell Sage Rink.

The Tournées Festival continues with Polisse on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m., in the Kirner-Johnson Building’s Bradford Auditorium. The film series is presented by the Department of French in collaboration with the Kirkland Art Center. Film showings are free and open to everyone; suggested donations of $3. to the Kirkland Art Center are welcome.

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate discussed the disappearance of churches in Upstate New York and across the nation with alumnus David Chanatry ’80 during Chanatry’s report, “Another Church Shuttered In MohawkValley,” broadcast on public radio station WAMC on Feb. 12. Plate was quoted earlier this week in a Washington Times article titled “Hollywood films a testament to renewed interest in Bible stories.”

Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking, affects approximately three-quarters of the population1.  Nevertheless, the Oral Communication Center’s eighth annual Public Speaking Competition draws students from all class years, disciplines and extracurriculars. Even if you aren’t glossophobic, you might still get a little nervous before speaking to crowds. Some of Hamilton’s former winners and current participants generously reveal their tactics and motivations for competing.
