Associate Professor of Japanese Kyoko Omori gave an invited lecture at the Mansfield Freeman Center at Wesleyan University on Oct. 18. The talk, titled "Usher Unsilenced: Edgar Allan Poe, Benshi, and Modernist Narrative Art in Japan," was part of Wesleyan’s FEAS lecture series.

According to author and University of Chicago professor Martha Nussbaum, many people in the U.S. and Europe would like to believe that religious intolerance is an issue that characterizes an earlier, darker era of civilization. However, closer examination reveals an uninformed and intolerant message behind a series of recent laws targeting Muslims around the world. On Nov. 2, Nussbaum lectured on intolerance toward and fear of Muslims, specifically regarding the burqa, a bulky outer garment worn by some Muslim women that covers the hair and face.

Syracuse University dean and professor Laura Steinberg will discuss the impact of natural disasters and how communities respond on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 4:15 p.m., in Bradford Auditorium. The lecture, which is part of the Levitt Public Affairs Center’s Sustainability series, is free and open to the public.

Novelist and alumnus Peter Cameron ’82, H’12 will read from a new story and from his novel Coral Glynn on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. Cameron is a critically acclaimed fiction author who has six published novels. His reading is free and open to the public.

Edward North Professor of Classics Barbara Gold published an article, “Juvenal: The Idea of the Book,” in A Companion to Persius and Juvenal, edited by Susanna Braund and Josiah Osgood (Wiley-Blackwell 2012).

Publication prints by Frederic Remington from the collection of Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion Emeritus Jay Williams ’54 will be on display Nov. 5- Dec. 8 at the Edith Langley Barrett Art Gallery at Utica College.

Assistant Professor of Art Robert Knight published “Family of Man,” a review of a recent photography exhibition, in the current issue of Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism.

Critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Pamela Mason Wagner will preview her latest work Makers, on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m., in Bradford Auditorium. Makers explores the advancement of women’s rights and the feminist movement over the past 50 years; the full documentary will air on PBS in early 2013. The screening is the fourth installment in fall F.I.L.M. series, and is free and open to the public.
