LITS staff members Mark Tillson and Kristin Strohmeyer show items from Hamilton's Special Collections.

More than 100 middle and high school students from eight regional school districts competed in the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES District’s 2019 Battle of the Books hosted by Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) in Burke Library.  Educational programming was provided by LITS' Research and Instructional Design and Special Collections team members.

Instructional Designer Doug Higgins and Educational Technologist Bret Olsen took groups of students outside to fly a drone. Digital Media and 3D Technology Specialist Ben Salzman ’14, Research Librarian for Teaching and Learning Initiatives Alex Wohnsen, and Sacharja Cunningham ’19 helped guide students navigate virtual reality worlds.

Students also got hands-on experience in rare books and manuscripts with Special Collections Coordinator Mark Tillson and Research and Outreach Librarian Kristin Strohmeyer.

Holland Patent Middle and High Schools were the competition winners. Each school’s team members were required to read roughly 10 books and were then quizzed on where specific quotes could be found.
