A lot happened before the Theatre Department’s musical Spring Awakening opened on April 14 in the Eugene Romano Theatre.  Starting with auditions in February the production took shape as  sets were  designed, music was learned, costumes were made and many hours of rehearsals were held. College photographer Nancy Ford spent the last two months capturing what went on behind the scenes before actors took the stage.  Take a look at what goes in to the making of a musical.

The Hamilton College Theatre Department presents the spring production of the musical Spring Awakening, book and lyrics by Steven Sater, and music by Duncan Sheik. Based on Frank Wedekind’s provocative play, the Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening explores the conflict between repressive adult society and adolescent sexual awakenings in 19th century Germany. It's directed by Professor of Theatre Craig Latrell, with music direction by Karen Corigliano and choreography by Professor of Dance Elaine Heekin.

Professor of Theatre Craig Latrell presented “Weddings, Yoga, Hookups: Performed Identities and Technology in Bali” on Aug. 13 at the eighth conference of the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS), held at the University of Vienna, Austria.

When you think of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Hamlet’s soliloquy “to be, or not to be” is probably the first thing that comes to mind. This scene is just one well-known example of the power of monologues. Monologues, whether in a 17th-century play or a recent movie, have a special power to delve into the mind of characters and connect with audiences. This summer, Kelsey Crane ’17 is exploring the particular power of monologues, working with Professor of Theatre Craig Latrell under an Emerson Summer Research grant.

The Hamilton College Theatre Department presents Our Town by Thornton Wilder as its Spring Theater Production. Performances will run Thursday, April 16 – Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., and Wednesday, April 22 – Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be performed on Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. All performances take place in the new state-of-the-art Romano Theatre within the Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts.

The Hamilton College Theatre Department announces the second week of the Spring Theater Production, Dark Play or Stories for Boys by Carlos Murillo. Performances will run Thursday, April 24 – Saturday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m.

The Hamilton College F.I.L.M. (Forum for Images and Languages in Motion) series will present The Act of Killing (2012) from director Josh Oppenheimer on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The event includes the screening of the film as well as a discussion with Hamilton professors Craig Latrell, Lawrence Chua and Scott MacDonald. It is free, open to the public and co-sponsored by the Hamilton College Asia Forum.

Theatre major Wynn Van Dusen ’15 recently had a unique opportunity that many seasoned veterans work for years to obtain. Van Dusen’s play “Slow” was was one of 10 accepted at the Red Shirt Rooftop Reading series, a New York City play festival that took place Sept. 20-22.

The Hamilton College Theatre Department will present its Spring Theater Production, Orestes 2.0 by Charles Mee. Performances will run Thursday, April 12, through Saturday, April 14, at 8 p.m., and Wednesday, April 18, through Saturday, April 21, at 8 p.m. There is an additional performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. All performances will take place in Minor Theater.
