While many Hamilton students end up pursuing their passions professionally after graduation, some start earlier. Carolyn Kossow ’17 is spending her summer in an internship with the Health and Reproductive Rights section of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) in Washington, D.C.

Hamilton Reece Thompson ’18 is undertaking research this summer to uncover and illuminate the links in ideology that connect human trafficking with societal trends such as the medicalization of the human body, and the objectification and commoditization of women via advertising. Thompson is one of this year’s four Kirkland Summer Associates. He’s working on his research with Associate Professor of Women’s Studies Vivyan Adair.

Graduating seniors Ryan Dorey, Victoria Lin, Sara Kleinman and Isabel Oskwarek were chosen by the French Ministry of Education to participate in the Teaching Assistants in France Program for 2015-16.

Joyce M. Barry, visiting assistant professor of women’s studies, was invited by the department of Environment and Sustainability at Bowling Green State University to give a lecture on April 21 as part of BGSU’s Earth Week programming.

Author, advocate and independent scholar Barbara Smith will present a lecture titled “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Forty Years of Movement Building” on Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m., in the Red Pit in the Kirner-Johnson Building. Smith’s lecture is sponsored by the Women’s Studies Department and is free and open to the public.

Joyce M. Barry, visiting assistant professor of women’s studies, published an article in the anthology Women of the Mountain South: Identity, Work and Activism.

With extensive media coverage of gruesome acts committed by ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Jihadists, the Taliban and the Boko Haram, to name a few, many Americans wonder why Islam lends itself so readily to violent extremism. The same question has been recently raised on-campus by the Enquiry, a weekly opinion editorial sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Institute, prompting the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the Arabic and Middle East Club (AMEC) to invite a panel of experts to campus in an effort to deepen the community’s understanding of the connection, or lack thereof, between Islam and extremism.

Hamilton College will host a panel titled “Islam: A Religion of Extremism?” with a panel of experts, including former U.S. ambassadors and faculty with expertise in the Middle East, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 4:15 p.m., in the Chapel. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Cara E. Jones, visiting assistant professor of women’s studies, recently presented papers titled “Compulsory (Re)productivity and Crip Existence” and “Disability and the Contingent Body” at the 2014 National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) Conference held Nov. 13-16 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Rachel Sobel ’15, a biochemistry and women’s studies double major, has been selected for the second consecutive year to attend the United Nations Climate Change Convention. She is one of eight students sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) to attend the talks, being held this year in Lima, Peru, from Dec. 1-12.
