Students in Hamilton’s Program in New York City recently attended a breakfast hosted by alumni at Citigroup, giving them a chance to informally connect with alumni in the industry.  Citi’s banking offices are located in Tribeca, not too far from Hamilton’s apartments in Battery Park City. The event was hosted by  alumni Jeffrey Schackner ‘89 and Peter Tague ‘88.

Students in the Semester in Washington Program met with U.S. Representative Richard Hanna of New York’s 24th District on Oct. 12. Rep. Hanna fielded a variety of questions from the group about his experiences as a new member of the House of Representatives and about the issues confronting the 112th Congress.

A dinner and reading by author Colum McCann was the culminating event for students in this semester’s Program in New York City.  The event was part of the Eat, Drink & Be Literary series sponsored by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The Hamilton students’ attendance was underwritten by Arthur Levitt  P’81, HD ’81, Brooklyn native and BAM enthusiast, and Bill Lynch ’82, vice president for development at BAM.

Over the weekend of Oct. 2-3, the College 220 class, “The Cultural and Natural Histories of the Adirondacks,” explored several Adirondack natural sites, visited the historic John Brown’s cabin in North Elba, and took part in a seminar on paddler’s rights during an overnight visit to Camp Wenonah, owned by alumnus James Schoff, ’68.

Alumni and students had the opportunity to experience the power of the college’s alumni network firsthand at the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Summit on April 16-18. Many presentations focused on the power of social media and other digital solutions to expand career opportunities.

Cracking his first joke of many, Paul Lieberstein said that “it’s like a bizarre reunion where I’m the only one who’s aged,” referring to the standing-room only crowd in Wellin Hall on April 16. Lieberstein graduated from Hamilton in 1989 with a degree in economics, but, as everyone in the audience was well-aware, he became a household name not as an auditor but as a writer and actor on the hit NBC show The Office. Ultimately getting to that destination, however, was not easy: Lieberstein had to climb over and sidle past unhelpful career counselors, dead-end bank jobs, crazed bosses, incompetent agents and Los Angeles itself.

Paul Lieberstein ’89, Toby Flenderson of NBC’s “The Office” visited Hamilton on April 16 for a sold-out lecture sponsored by the Campus Activities Board. During the afternoon Lieberstein took some time to talk with students from various Hamilton media organizations and toured the campus.

Jeffrey Schackner ‘89, managing director and co-head of Global Consumer Products Banking at Citigroup, visited and conducted the Economics Department’s International Finance class on Nov. 30.

On the evening of October 14, students in the Program in Washington were welcomed into the office of Williams and Jensen, a leading government affairs law firm, for a presentation on politics and lobbying by principals George Baker ’74 and Frank Vlossak ’89.

David Monaco '89 has been named the next head of the Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas.  Monaco will be replacing the school's long-standing head, Gloria Synder, when she steps down in June.  At Hamilton, Monaco was a history major and a member of the football team.
