Two exhibitions, Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe and Pure Pulp: Contemporary Artists Working in Paper at Dieu Donné, open at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a free, public reception from 4 – 6 p.m. Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe, curated by Wellin Museum Director Tracy Adler, will be open through July 2. Pure Pulp will be open until April 20. Both shows will travel to other venues.

Sixty-one percent of Hamilton students study off campus for a semester or full year. Last summer and fall, Annie Whitehurst ’16 was one of those students, studying abroad through Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program. After a summer and semester in Beijing, however, Whitehurst was not ready to leave China for good. She returned to Beijing this summer as an intern with the Foreign Commercial Service at the U.S. Embassy. With support from the Scott Steven Morris ’86 Fund managed by Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center, Whitehurst spent the summer planning events, conducting research, and enjoying more time in China.

Lisa Yang ’17 and Aida Shadrav ’17 have been awarded Gilman International Scholarship Program awards for undergraduate study abroad. Yang plans to study in China through the Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program this summer and Shadrav will study in Spain this fall through the Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain.

Matthew Palmer’16  and Evelyn Torsher ’17 have been awarded the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). Palmer will study Chinese in China and Torsher will study Arabic in Jordan, Oman or Morocco.

Revolutionary Cycles in Chinese Cinema by Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang was recently published by Palgrave Macmillan.

De Bao Xu, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, organized the 8th International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in the 21st Century (TCLT8). Co-sponsored by Hamilton and Tufts University, the event was held June 6-8 at Tufts.

Every day, one billion viewers tune in for the variety of shows broadcasted by China Central Television (CCTV).  One subchannel, CCTV America is the English-language news channel run by Chinese state broadcaster, developing programming for English-speaking audiences worldwide. Liza Strauss ’15 is interning with CCTV America in Washington D.C. this summer.

De Bao Xu, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, gave a keynote speech titled “Classic Reading, Writing Skill, and Critical Thinking” at the 50th International Conference on Elementary Chinese Education (ICECE).

The Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center recently announced the 2014 Levitt Summer Research Fellows. To enhance student research around issues of public affairs, the Levitt Center funds student-faculty research through its Levitt Research Fellows Program. The program is open to rising juniors and seniors who wish to spend the summer working in collaboration with a faculty member on an issue related to public affairs. De Bao Xu, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor and chair of East Asian Languages and Literatures, received a special grant from the Hakka Foundation for his endeavors with the Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching (JTCLT) and the International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in the 21st Century (TCLT).
