The Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series resumes on Saturday, Jan. 21, with author Kathy Purdy. She will give a lecture titled “Colchicums: Autumn’s Best-Kept Secret” at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium.

The Hamilton Arboretum series continues on Saturday, Nov. 12, when author and environmental educator Anita Sanchez discusses the roles of poison ivy in both human and natural history.

The Hamilton Arboretum’s 2016-17 Third Saturday series opens Saturday, Oct. 22, when Aida Khalil, professor of landscape design and management at SUNY Morrisville State College.

June in the Mohawk Valley means strawberries, Farmers’ Markets and at Hamilton College – scores of blooming, colorful peonies. From the brilliantly crimson Alexander Woollcott to the aptly named Daffodil, the lush flowers are flourishing in Hamilton’s Grant Garden, behind Elihu Root House.  Professor of Biology Emeritus Ernest Williams has created Peony Phenology, a chart that outlines the approximate flowering dates for the 68 varieties.

Gardening writer and avid “farmdener” (more than a gardener, less than a farmer) Lee Reich will discuss “Luscious Landscaping with Fruiting Trees, Shrubs and Vines” when the Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series continues on Saturday, April 16.

The Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series continues on Saturday, March 19, with professional landscape designer and garden writer Judy Nauseef K’73. She will present a lecture titled “Residential Garden Profiles” at 10 a.m. in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center.

The Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series continues on Saturday, Feb. 20, with a lecture by Carol Bradford, horticulturist and gardening columnist for The Syracuse Post Standard. She will present “Springtime in Japan” at 10 a.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center. All Arboretum events are free and open to the public.

The Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series continues on Saturday, Jan. 16, with Steve Blair, International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborist and representative of Bartlett Tree Experts. He will present a lecture titled “From the Cradle to the Grave, Tree and Shrub Care for the CNY Homeowner” at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium.

Mal Condon, founder of Hydrangea Farm Nursery, will present a lecture titled “Success with Hydrangeas” on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center. The lecture is part of Hamilton’s Arboretum Series and is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a question and answer session.

Hamilton joins the nation in celebrating Arbor Day on April 24. The College's arboretum has 2,281 separate trees on inventory, with the maple being the most dominant species on campus. The Arbor Day Foundation notes that trees pay us back in storm water control, property value, energy, air quality and Co2 benefits. Read more on the Hamilton Arboretum page.
