Five Hamilton students spent a week shadowing resident physicians at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica during the week of Jan 12.  Catherine Oglevee ’15, Deanna Cho ’15, Jamie McLean ’15, Ashley Carducci ’15, and John Bennett ’16 had the opportunity to experience what it means to be a medical resident.

Armed with an intricate headpiece of lion teeth, a variety of jazz instruments, and a deep-rooted passion for the growth of humanity, Syracuse Professor and self-described “word artist” Arthur Flowers serenaded the crowd in Tolles Pavilion on January 19 in homage to Martin Luther King Jr.

In an email to the Hamilton community, President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the death of Donald Brandreth Potter, professor of geology emeritus. He died on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at his home following complications from a fall.

Visiting Professor of Theater Andrew Holland designed the scenery for Opera San Antonio's premier, full-stage production of Richard Strauss' Salome. The show opened on Jan. 8 in the newly constructed Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio, Texas.

Tickets remain for the Thursday, Jan. 22, Theatre Department performance of The Mountaintop by Katori Hall in the Barrett Theatre, Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts.  Tuesday and Wednesday's dinner performances are sold out.

When classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 39 new members of the class of 2018 and six transfer students will be among those settling in for the spring semester. The “Jans” arrived on campus on Friday and have been taking part in orientation activities.

There never has been, and there never will be.” The bold statement from Prudence Bushnell, former Ambassador to Kenya and Guatemala as well as the former Sol M. Linowitz Visiting Professor of International Relations at Hamilton College, set the tone for the diverse group of Hamilton students participating in the 4th annual Levitt Leadership Institute, Jan. 12-16.

Hamilton’s 39 January admits and six transfer students participated in Hamilton Serves on Saturday, Jan. 17, as part of their orientation. They visited seven area non-profit agencies  for a morning of service.

When Hamilton dedicated the $46.8 million Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts as part of Fallcoming and Family Weekend in October, more than 3,000 alumni, parents and friends filled hotels, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants in Central New York. Constructing new facilities and hosting such celebratory weekends are two factors considered in a new economic impact study commissioned by the Albany-based Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) for its members.

John McEnroe, the John and Anne Fischer Professor of Fine Art, and his colleague Matt Buell of Trent University, recently presented two papers based on their excavations in the Bronze Age town of Gournia in Crete.
