Women's basketball and men's and women's hockey games will be broadcast this week on Northeast Sports Network (NSN). NSN is producing video webcasts of Hamilton athletic events for the remainder of the 2014-15 academic year. All broadcasts are available at no cost to viewers.

Three Hamilton students have been selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) that will take place in March 6-8 at the University of Miami, Florida. Ryan Ong  ’16, Sharif Shrestha ’17 and Jose Vazquez ’15  will attend CGI U along with Tsion Tsefaye ’16 who was chosen in November.

Opinion pieces, letters to the editor, expert commentaries and studies, book reviews and special projects all contributed to Hamilton’s many appearances in the national media this year. From National Public Radio to The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, faculty and staff submissions and responses to media outlets made the college very visible.

Eight Hamilton students have received creativity grants from the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The 2014 recipients are Kate Bickmore ’15, Sean-Henry Smith ’15, Lesley Klose ’15, Sawyer Konys ’16, James Larson ’17, Megan O’Sullivan ’15, Caroline Rudd ’16, and Sara Wortman ’15.

The opening of the Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Performing Arts and former New York Yankees captain and shortstop Derek Jeter’s visit to Hamilton in December drew a great deal of interest from local media during 2014. Student research and volunteering garnered significant local attention, and faculty members and administrators offered expertise on timely news topics throughout the year.

While most students were studying for exams as the semester came to a close, members of Hamilton Microfinance (HMF) were finalizing their third loan. Building off the momentum from October’s Great Pumpkin Challenge Fundraiser – which raised more than $1000 toward providing small business loans to local entrepreneurs – Hamilton’s micro-lenders identified several potential loan applicants, moving one step closer to achieving their strategic goal of issuing a loan by the end of the semester.

Allie Pohl ’07 presented an installation from her Ideal Woman series at SCOPE contemporary art show in Miami, FL during Art Basel 2014. The annual exhibition, which ran from December 2-7th, featured several life-sized sculptures by Pohl, each is a variation of the feminine form that has become her signature series, Ideal Woman. Pohl’s Designer Ideal Woman was selected by NYLON Magazine as one of the top ten pieces to see in Miami during Art Basel 2014. 

Associate Professor of Philosophy Katheryn Doran organized, chaired and participated in a panel on “Teaching Philosophy in Non-Traditional Settings” at the meeting of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association (APA). The 111th annual Eastern Division meeting was held Dec. 27-30 in Philadelphia.

Co-ed a cappella group Duelly Noted is preparing for its fifth annual concert tour during Hamilton’s winter break. The three-day tour will include performances in New York State, Rhode Island and Vermont.

“Efficiency in Employee-Owned Enterprises: An Econometric Case Study of Mondragon,” an article co-authored by Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, was recently published online in ILR Review: The Journal of Work and Policy.
