  • Three exhibits opening on Monday, Jan. 14, at Hamilton's Emerson Gallery explore key moments in African-American history through photography and political satire. Two photography exhibits are comprised of images of Underground Railroad sites and Civil War venues at which black soldiers fought. The third exhibit explores the reality of life for many African-Americans in post-Civil War America as seen through images of political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902).

  • Local media coverage is as important to Hamilton as is national attention. Hamilton students and faculty contribute their time and expertise to the local community in many ways. College-sponsored programs also make news in Central New York. Alerting the community to Hamilton's many public lectures and events contributes to stronger community ties. Here are some of those stories from 2007.

  • Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Alan Kim has published an article titled "Recollecting the Soul: Paul Natorp's Construction of a Platonic 'Psychology'" in the Dec. 2008 issue of the Internationale Zeitschrift für Philosophie. Natorp was a philosopher of the Marburg School of Neo-Kantianism that dominated the German philosophical scene at the turn of the last century, but which has only recently enjoyed a revival of interest.

  • News organizations speak with Hamilton faculty members about important national and world events. Faculty members also write opinion pieces, letters and comments that either the media relations office or the faculty member places in national newspapers and publication. Here are some of our favorites.

  • Assistant Professor of Anthropology Haeng-ja Chung presented a paper, "Erotic Capital of Korean Nightclub Hostesses in Japan: Performative, Emotional, & Affective Labor," at the Symposium: Imperial Japan and Colonial Sensibility: Affect, Object, Embodiment at UCLA on Dec. 7.

  • Hamilton's Media Relations Office helps make national media outlets aware of significant news about the College. Some of our favorite stories from 2007 appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times,  The Washington Post, Trusteeship Magazine, InsideHigherEd.com and USA Today among others.

  • A generous supporter of many nonprofit organizations in the Mohawk Valley and beyond, alumnus Eugene Romano '49 has made a major gift to Hamilton. The $2.5 million donation is targeted for the construction of a new 150-seat theatre that will serve both Hamilton and the surrounding communities. Over the many years that he has supported the College, this is Romano's largest gift.

  • A Community Concert, canceled due to last Sunday's snowstorm, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Dec. 22, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton. The purpose of this event, which is free and open to the public, is to raise donations to build a school in Cambodia.

  • The media relations office has collected a sampling of stories about the Hamilton College community's involvement in projects focused on making the holidays happier for others. We know that we may have missed some good stories of selfless giving, but we hope you enjoy those that we have gathered.

  • The work of Associate Professor of Art Ella Gant is being exhibited by the Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis in a one-person show titled "mother choo choo" through Jan. 12, 2008. Featured in the gallery's New Media Room, Gant's series of short videos are centered on the principle that, in her words, "awareness of our own experience can inspire social consciousness, political responsibility, cultural interaction and changed behavior."
