Students on the Hamilton Junior Year in France program escaped the four inches of snow that fell on Paris during the weekend of January 19-20 to travel to Provence.

More than 80 students volunteered at non-profit agencies in the local community on Saturday, Jan. 26, for Hamilton’s 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day. Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) sent groups of students to 19 different sites to spend the afternoon working on various projects.

The scholarly achievements of female faculty authors in the humanities and social sciences at Hamilton College were celebrated at a book party in the Burke Library this winter. 

Five members of Hamilton’s class of 2013 spent a week shadowing resident physicians at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, from Jan. 14-18.  Tiffany Andrade, Emma Geduldig, Robert Hawkins, Megan Lander and Akritee Shrestha all received real-life experience in medical careers. The program, “A Week in the Life of a Family Medicine Resident,” is in its eight consecutive year.

Heidi M. Ravven, professor of religious studies, was an invited participant in a small, intensive seminar on affective neuroscience Dec. 12 – 19 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Associate Professor of Art Ella Gant and 15 students participating in the spring 2013 New York City Program started the semester with a visit to the studio of visual artist Spencer Finch '85.

A new book review by Assistant Professor of History John Eldevik has appeared in the most recent issue of the English Historical Review. Eldevik's review discusses "Patterns of Episcopal Power: Bishops in Tenth and Eleventh Century Western Europe," ed. Ludger Körntgen, and Dominik Wassenhoven (Berlin, 2011), a collection of scholarly essays by German and British historians on the role of bishops in early medieval politics and culture.

Hamilton College has joined The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and Victoria University of Wellington as a sponsoring institution of the International Journal of Wellbeing (IJW). According to its website, the IJW “was launched on 31st January 2011 in order to promote interdisciplinary research on wellbeing.”

Associate Professor of Psychology Jen Borton and five students attended the annual conference of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in New Orleans, Jan. 17-21. The students had conducted research with Borton in 2011 or 2012 and presented posters of their work.

During the two weeks before they returned to campus, some 143 Hamilton sophomores got a close look at possible careers as they took part in the third HamiltonExplore, sponsored by the Career Center.
