In his first visit to upstate New York, Sam Quinones, author of the critically-acclaimed book Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic, delivered a powerful lecture to the Hamilton community on the story of the opioid epidemic in America. This is a problem that has been plaguing the country for many years, but it recently reached mainstream attention because of the gravity and scope of the epidemic.

Taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather, the Multicultural Peer Mentoring Program (MP2) visited the North Star Orchard in Westmoreland, N.Y., on Oct. 21, exploring the area and picking some beautiful upstate apples and pumpkins.

Hamilton College Performing Arts presents the dance company BalletX on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

Hamilton was well-represented at the 10th annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), held this year at Northeastern University. Risper Kirui ’19, Emily DeJong ‘19, Gerard Pozzi ‘18 and KT Glusac ‘17 were among the more than 1,100 students chosen to attend the prestigious conference. In addition previous CGI U attendees Sharif Shrestha ‘17, Emily Moscowitz ‘16 and Andy Chen ’16 returned this year. All were recipients of Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center funding and/or support.

Maurice Isserman, the Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History, was recently a participant on a panel at the “From Protesting to Resistance” conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on the Pentagon.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Simon Coppard was a co-author of a paper that was awarded a Smithsonian 2017 Secretary’s Research Prize in recognition of excellence in recent research.

Assistant Professor of Physics Viva Horowitz gave an invited research presentation at the Syracuse University Condensed Matter seminar on Oct. 13.

Students in Hamilton’s Program in New York City recently visited Robert Morris ’76, P’16,’17 founder and managing partner of Olympus Partners, a private equity firm in Stamford, Conn. This semester’s theme is Global Financial Networks and is directed by Professor of Economics Erol Balkan.

The Hamilton Microfinance Club traveled to the thINCubator in Utica on Oct. 4 to watch finalists do their pitches in the Downtown Startup Challenge Finals. This was the conclusion of a three-phase process that began in June where numerous individuals and groups with innovative business concepts gathered and competed to win a grand prize of $30,000. This challenge was aimed at spurring economic growth in downtown Utica and Rome by aiding and inspiring people to pursue a vision of creating a startup company.

Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz recently discussed her work on classics and social justice in talks in New York City and in the United Kingdom.
