Students in Professor Katheryn Doran’s  Philosophy 235 (Environmental Ethics) class visited the Madison County landfill on April 6. Doran said the class had the opportunity to see firsthand both the challenges of figuring out where and how to get rid of the staggering amount and variety of garbage  Americans cast off weekly. 

Visiting Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Irene Depetris Chauvin presented a paper at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) annual conference March 21-25 in Boston.

Dorothy Roberts, Kirkland & Ellis Professor at Northwestern University School of Law, will present a lecture on Wednesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel. The lecture, “Fatal Invention: Re-creating Race in the 21st Century,” is based on her 2011 book of the same name and is free and open to the public.

Hamilton’s focus on the development of effective written and verbal skills readily applies to students pursuing careers in communications, and if the attendance at the Media Board’s Multimedia Journalism Forum is any indicator, there are many such students at the College.

"Can Colleges Manufacture Motivation?," an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, opened with comments by Daniel Chambliss, The Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology. “‘Motivation is an outcome of college. … It energizes people to want to learn more and go out in the world and grab it by the throat,’” began Chambliss, who is completing a book with Christopher Takacs ’05 titled How College Works (Harvard University Press).

April 9-14 marked the first Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach, and Charity  (HAVOC) Outreach Awareness Week at Hamilton. The purpose of Awareness Week, dubbed “Burst the Bubble,” was to illustrate volunteer opportunities at Hamilton and to stress the value of community outreach. HAVOC sponsored and organized a variety of volunteer opportunities, speakers and events throughout the week, culminating with SpringFest on Saturday.  

 A.G. Lafley, former president, CEO and board chair of the Procter & Gamble Company, delivered one of two keynote addresses at the “Rethinking Success: From the Liberal Arts to Careers in the 21st Century” conference held April 11-13 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Students accepted to Hamilton’s class of 2016 are on campus today with their families for the annual Accepted Student Open House. Attendees can sit in on faculty seminars, tour the campus, and hear from President Joan Hinde Stewart and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Monica Inzer. Early spring is the time of year on the hill when hopeful student grant and fellowship candidates begin to hear back from organizations on the status of their applications. For a lot of students, reception of a prestigious award can be the highest honor and a dream come true. It can mean the chance to conduct independent research at a foreign university, teach English in a developing nation, or implement a self-designed project in the name of global peace and sustainability.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi was a featured speaker in the South Asia Program Seminar Series at Cornell University on April 9.  Trivedi's talk "Women at Work in India: Photographs from Ahmedabad, 1937," examined a collection of some 70 photographs taken by Pranlal Patel and commissioned by the Jyoti Sangh, a women's organization.
